I have no idea of Belgium, never been there or have met anyone who lives there. However, at least as your goal is to be in research/academia, you can easily enquire regarding future opportunities, especially from teaching/research perspective. Look it up on academic recruitment (or general recruitment) websites and check how many openings are there. Of course there is no guarantee that the trends continue by the time you have finished your degree but at least you get an idea. Also, maybe there is a possibility that you may not be required to speak/learn Finnish in order to teach or do research, as in some Universities there is a drive towards "Internationalisation".andttrip wrote:Thanks. It seems that I made a wrong decision. Vaasa is geographically isolated. On the contrary, Antwerp can enjoy many intangible merits.mmkhi wrote:Man, you got it all wrongit's your choice anyway. Just one more "statistic" as you like them apparently:
Where can you get in 2-3 hours by train from vaasa? ... i have no idea. tampere maybe? lapland?!
Where can you get in 2-3 hours by train from antwerp? London, Paris, Amsterdam, Cologne, Luxembourg, Brussels...
Also, besides all other points, you should decide based on the quality of research (and reputation) of the University that you are applying for your Doctorate. All other things will follow if you have solid research experience under your belt. Then your movement could be even broader and finding opportunities much easier. Look up the track record of your potential PhD supervisor and colleagues on Google scholar or other relevant websites.
Good luck with your decision.
