Hi everyone,

I reached out to Migri today and received the usual response — that the current estimated processing time for citizenship applications is 31 months. According to the online calculator, I should expect a decision by the end of this year. For context, I visited Migri in mid-June 2023.

I also asked about the basket system. Apparently, they are still actively using it. Based on what I was told, applicants with official refugee status tend to face the longest processing times, and Migri is currently working on applications submitted in October 2022.

While I don’t have refugee status myself, I do come from a country where most applicants are granted it. So, I suspect that Migri may have placed me in the 31-month processing group because of this.

Has anyone else contacted Migri recently and been told that their application processing will start soon?

Also, a side note — I always seem to get replies from a Senior Specialist named Katariina. I’m starting to wonder if she’s specifically handling the longer processing time cases, or if I’m just reading too much into it.

Would be great to hear your experiences!

It is usually bwcause of some unstable contries in moddle east so they cannot check identity easily, not because of status itself. So you can wait indeed 31 months.

The calculator also hasn't been updated for a long time. It will give 30 months to majority.

Do you still have reasons to keep you residence permit as initial one (work etc)? On what grounds did they gave it to you? If you don't have PR and started a company, and ground for residence permit are not valid (i.e. no work), you might have a problem. If grounds for residence permit are valid plus you have a company than you are fine.
I started a company after I got PR. everything is fine they are just not issuing a decision .
When did you apply for citezenship? It takes 23-24 months for enterpreneurs these days
applied in may 23 , it entered stage 2 about a month ago. but when i contacted migri about it they said your kids visa has expired and we will contact you shortly . however when i inquired about my kid's RP migri said it will take approximately about 2-3 months more. my guess is migri is only playing games and probably delaying issuing the decision for some queer reason beyond my apprehension . God knows what they are upto anyways

I called them yesterday and they said that they have recently changed the system and no longer use separate queues. I don't believe it though. I know someone who applied in December 2024 and has just received a positive decision. 16 months and counting for me, still on stage 1...

Of course, it is not true. As they say in FAQ section "All applications are not processed in the order in which they arrive at the Finnish Immigration Service, and processing times vary more than usual at the moment."
Also, at least applications of persons who have received international protection or are stateless submitted after 1 October 2024 are process within max 12 month by law.

Hey, has anyone here gone through the Finnish citizenship process and gotten a day-fine for speeding during that time? I was caught driving 64 km/h in a 50 zone and got a day-fine. I’ve heard small numbers of day-fines usually don’t block citizenship but might cause delays. Would love to hear if anyone’s been in a similar situation and how it affected their applicatioN. The reason for speeding was because of my children needing to use the restroom and it was any available. So they were crying and I was in a hurry to get home. :(

This does not look like a big isussue unless you will have more fines like this. If you have criminal record (+20km/h usually) than you are in trouble.

These are just speculations... It doesn't affect the process. Also, Migri doesn't randomly check the fines of the applicants before opening the case (as many applications wait in queue untouched for a long time). They don't have the resources for that. A toilet emergency is not enough reason to speed. You could visit nearby shops or restaurants instead of speeding.

34 months? This exceed there promise of 31 months. Do you know why this lasts so long?

Nope. I am not a refugee, not an entrepreneur. I contacted them a couple of months ago and the response was standard: the application is being processed, wait for additional request or the decision..
