Me :
>> "Pirssi" comes from the Russian word "birs". I do not know if "birs" is used in modern Russian. <<

Maybe the word "birs" should be "birzja".

"Birzja" means "horse carriage station", if I am correctly informed.

I wouldn't expect people to recognize "vossikka" meaning a horse-carriage or a taxicab to come from "izvoztshik" :lol:

Common Helsinki slang though is a bit more evident:
mesta = a place
koni= a mangy horse
voda = water
narikka=place you leave your coats when you go to disco :lol: (used to be the name of the jewish old clothes' market in the 1800's where the Kamppi bus station is now)
lafka= business
safka= food
bonjata,snaijata = to understand/get it
Cheers, Hank W.

Most Welshmen speak English, most Finns also speak Finnish. I admit there are places like the Åland Islands, where Swedish may be more handy.

Finnish isn't a weird language... it's just different to English. After going away and sticking my nose in loads of books and webpages trying to teach myself Finnish I've actually got somewhere with cases! I can (almost) work out the genetive stem now (which is used in more than one case, for those who don't know).

That blog is pretty helpful :D thanks!

I am Russian actually and do not know what is "turgu" or "pirssi".
dah!???... "turgu" is probably a mispronounced "TORGI". as for "pirssi" -- sounds gibberish to me as well.
