That definition covers most of the British uses of the word college including Oxford & Cambridge Universities which are collections of smaller colleges... except the one in the UK which is closest to the US definition...

The University of London is a collection of Universities and Colleges e.g. Imperial College, University College, Kings College, Queen Mary College, Birkbeck College etc etc.

Many are called Something College but are AFAIK independent universities and people who attend them would still say they are at uni!

Oh and those College shirts that you find here are called sweatshirts in the UK. The trousers are sweatpants or jogging bottoms.

does anybody else find it funny that kätkyt never replied to his/her own post, but yet it sparked 4 pages of conversation?

But hey! if kätkyt is still around would be nice to come and join us in his/her thread!

Well, do you recall the first response he/she got? I PM-ed her/him after that nice welcome, but never got any word back.

Yes... I reckon as well that that welcome was a bit... rough. But I'm also sure that nobody meant that...

And if he/she come back we can absolutely give a re-welcoming!

The University of London is a federation of colleges. On a day-to-day basis they run as separate institutions, but they are under the central administration, the Senate, which confers degrees.

While I'm at it, a quote earlier in the thread implies there are only 2 ancient English universities. In fact there are three, the third being the unfamous University of Durham.

Okay, about Finnish language. It seems to me that yliopisto and university do not always mean the same (slightly different semantic fields). For example Finns say there are 3 yliopistoa in Turku, but in English there are 2 universities and a School of Economics and Business Studies (sorry, one faculty does not make a university in English).
Is this correct about yliopisto?

Well, kind of. In Finnish, many of these one-faculty (or highly specialised) universities use the term korkeakoulu instead of yliopisto. For example Turun kauppakorkeakoulu, Teknillinen korkeakoulu or Teatterikorkeakoulu are universities even though they don't have yliopisto in their name. But this is mostly semantics. Still, some universities have for some reason opted to change their name, like Tampereen teknillinen yliopisto used to be Tampereen teknillinen korkeakoulu.

Tadpole´s Mommy is not a bad person. She made a mistake and she apologized for it. We all make mistakes.

I´m still around! :D By the way could somebody tell me why you are so interested in Finland? I mean this a small country and like that. That´s a queston that has always interested me very much. :)

PS. If somebody wants to know something about me:
1) My name is Alli.
2) I am female.
3) I am fifteen
4) I live in Helsinki.

We were (well most of us winning here) dragged mercilessly to this frozen land by the female of the kind.
We spend our time here trying to discuss in a civilisad manner pretending that we do not blame our hormones, the actual responsables for our cruel destiny.

Others of us are interested in Finland because it is the Old Country, from where our foreparents emmigrated. We still have family there, and many Finns I know visit there now and again. I plan to visit Finland in the near future....hopefully when the Euro is at a low ebb.

I'm 100% Finnish bloodline. One grandfather grew up in Pori, other grew up in Karelia near Lake Ladoga (village is now in Russia  -not a popular family discussion) & both married Finns in Minnesota after they came to the USA. I will travel for the first time to Finland this summer. 8)
