Ancient Finns were called White Huns?

Why do I quess mysterious Hephthalites were ancient Finns? That's evident, because all you know too well that the Finns don't like to mingle with other tribes:

"...are of the stock of the Huns in fact as well as in name: however they do not mingle with any of the Huns known to us. They are the only ones among the Huns who have white bodies...."

Since you probably prefer looking at photos of "good looking" Finns instead of dreary faces of ordinary street dwellers, here's a website for a Finnish modelling agency: http://www.paparazzi.fi

Just click on the Women or Men and scroll down. Even though the people there are hardly average Finns, it nicely shows the variety of Finnish looks; we're not all blond and not all of us have "Asian-esque" eyes. Of course many do, myself included - and I'm still mistaken for a German every time here in the Netherlands. No one has ever named an Asian country. :)

Besides, nowadays with world populations mixing at incredible rate it's not as if race really matters. If someone in Finland has a Finnish passport, speaks Finnish and thinks of himself as a Finn, regardless of his skin colour or ethnicity, he is a Finn to me. Also, no matter how much or little Finnish genes might be Asian, we're European culture-wise. Always have been.

Personally it doesn't mather to me what a Finn looks like. Blond or dark, fine. I'm blond, my partner is dark. I have a round face (and round eyes), he has longish face and he looks a bit like a Basque...

But it gave me kind of joy to hear this theory that Finns could be ones of the very first people who came to Europe, those who were hunters and fishers. In this theory all the tribes of Europe are kind of relatives to one and another, but somehow only the Finno-Ugrists and Basques got hold onto their original language. The ones that started agriculture started to speek all the other languages (germanic etc.)

So that's a theory about language, about DNA of Finns it doesn't say much. I think I've heard that Hungarians don't have DNA close to Finns.

Controversial Zecharia Sitchin has given a thought that Finns are distant relatives of anciens Sumerians. This idea is about that Finnish is so vowel-based language, just like Sumerian was.

I have never heard that. But I have heard a theory that claims that Hungarians are related to Sumerians. A Hungarian friend who is a linguistics professor finds the whole idea absurd and impossible.

Language is really a poor indicator of someone's origins. As mentioned here and elsewhere on the forum, genetically the closest people to Finns are Estonians and other Balts, Dutch and Germans. Theory about Finnish people being the first people in Europe doesn't really fit into this perspective very well - and regardless of that, it's not like all the ancestors of modern day Finns came to this part of the world all that once. All evidence seems to point to the fact that throughout post ice age period, different groups of people have arrived here from south, west and east.

According to one theory, which is backed up by genetic research, one of the first arrivals who started pushing the Sami northwards were those proto-Finns that were of members of the same tribe, who are also ancestors to modern day German, Baltic, and Slavic peoples. It has been theorized that these proto-Finns spoke an Indoeuropean language. After they settled to Finland, subsequent immigration from the east brought them the Finno-Ugric language.

Of course it may very well be that the Finno-Ugric speaking proto-Finns were there before these "Germanic" proto-Finns came, but the overall situation is the same.

With Hungarians "we" have very little in common. Even Italians are closer. Basque, Same and Irish people are furthest.

It also should be kept in mind that before 19th century, the Finnish tribes were not nearly as mixed as they are now. For example, people from western coast had considerable Swedish (Germanic) ancestry. Karelians on the other hand were largely a mix of Tavastian Finns (themselves originally Finns from the west coast, who had settled eastwards), Russians, Swedes and Sami. Finns in eastern Finland were a mix of Tavastians and Karelians.

facts of life that the older generation has learned

"The Tribes of the Finnish Nation:

The Finns had separated into two tribes when they arrived here. Into the Tavastians and Karelians. The former settling into the west, and the latter to the eastern parts of our country. From these have later on formed the Savonian, the Ostrobothnian, and the Kainu tribes.

A TAVASTIAN is built big and strong. His eyes are greyish-blue, his hair blond. By nature he is less talkative and solemn than the Karelian. In his work he is industrious and practical. He is an epitome of a Finn. He is very inspired of farming.

A KARELIAN has a slender build and is taller. His eyes are darker and his hair brown and often curly. By his nature the Karelian is peppy, talkative and industrious. He however lacks the percistency of the Tavastian in his work. This can be witnessed in that he is not as interested in farming as the Tavastian. Instead the Karelian makes business willingly. Karelians love song and dance.

The PROPER-FINLANDIANs are a Tavastian tribe, which have been mixed with the Swedish population. A Proper-Finlandian is taller than a Tavastian. He is lively and speaks a curt dialect.

The OSTROBOTHNIANs are a peculiar tribe, who seem to have formed as a mixture of the Tavastian, Savonian and Swedish tribes. The Ostrobothnians are vigorous, brave, fiery and braggy. They are steadfast in farmwork and skillful in handiwork.

The SAVONIAN tribe has probably formed as a mixture of the Tavastian and Karelian tribes. The Savonian is by nature playful, his dialect is pronounced in a peculiar manner.

The SWEDISH belong to the Germanic family of nations as do the Danes and Germans. They are tall, slender, narrow-featured and straight-backed. By nature they are gay and additionally love cleanliness. The Swedish living in our country are classified by their abode to Åland, Nyland, Turku and Ostrobothnia Swedes.

LAPPS live in the counties of Enontekiö, Inari, Utsjoki and Sodankylä as well as the Russian, Swedish and Norwegian Lapplands. By their industry they are classified as Reindeer or Fisher Lapps. The Lapp is short and scrawny, the face is wide, the cheekbones protruding, the nose flat, their hair brown or black. The Reindeer Lapps live in wooden huts or leather tents that they move from one place to another. The Fisher Lapps live in wooden cabins."

Well, genetics and linguistics are having a big turf war at the moment as regards Finnish studies - Kalevi Wiik has really angered the linguists and feathers have been very much ruffled. I must say the whole thing seems incredibly arcane, I guess it would be nice to be related to Asians, the coming masters of the planet, but really any connections are very tenuous. I saw a table cited by Wiik which showed that Finns are genetically most closely related, of all people, the Flemish... A nation with which we have had very little historical or cultural contact. I mean look at our watery, disgusting lagers... Go figure.

Well, theres always politics involved. Look at the Sinkiang 'white mummies' and then the Uighur independence ties and you get very "politically correct" truth.

Here are the interesting color photos of the beginning of 20th century. There were made by Proskudin-Gorsky, he got the grant from the czar and traveled throughout the Russian Empire and took the portraits of national minorities...

The full list of the photos is here

There is an association called Suomalaisuuden liitto

Post by tero » Sat Oct 07, 2006 2:45 pm

I believe. They should know all about Finns and our origin. I believe we were pretty highly respected buddha monks in the past. Living in the high mountain areas somewhere in Tiibet-China. The reason I believe in this is that we are quite silent, peaceloving and absent minded.(more thinkers like)

Btw. I do not know whether the above association exists any more since it lost it's state fund for the reason I do not know. Perhaps it is forbidden to try to study the secrets and the myths of the Finns and their origin.

Does this man look like Mongoloid? Perhaps yes but he is a damn good formel one driver? In my opinion Michael Schumacher looks more like mongoloid, but who cares..

btw. the Finnish association has their own web pages, just in case you need real info about the origin of Finns.
http://www.suomalaisuudenliitto.fi
Seem to have a guest book in English and other pages in English as well. Drop a line there and say hello from mongoloids..

I am very sure that hardly any Finn knows anything about those men, including me. Really good info on the above page. Should be printed on the Finnish history books.(school books)

I thought Adolf Hitler was our president once in a lifetime. At least we did co-operate with Nazi Germany during the WW2. What a shame and I have never heard anyoby finding any Nazis in Finland?? Well what are the school books telling about the co-operation with Nazis? I quess nothing. The akward thinking is that the descendant of the Nazis still rule over the Finland!!!
In our neighbor country Sweden the Nazis are becoming back into power. First time after the ww2 Swedish Nazis has got Swedish state money for their politics.
