Re: Share your experiences~!
You are right, I should tone down what I say about myself and what I ask of others. I'm just really eager to share and gain thoughts and opinions. A habit I should probably break before my first visit to Finland...Cory wrote:AnnabelleIeve wrote:And my budget was, as I said, under 800k. And that's stretching the budget a bit. I would prefer to live in a nice neighborhood but I'll deal with the best place I can find to suit my needs. I'm a generous person, so what? I was raised around generosity and little acts of kindness.Geez. Just finished reading the last post you wrote in the other thread you started that yelled about wanting people to shut about your budget..blah, blah, blah.
If you say something, mean it. Lesson #1. Don't say anything that you won't follow through on because the majority just won't take you seriously which is why, now, some people here suspect you are a wind up. Lesson #2 is think carefully before you speak.. the less you say, the less info they have about you. It sometimes takes years for a lifelong friendship to develop because people take it slowly in sharing about themselves. Most just don't trust someone who talks too much about themselves or shares too much too quickly. Just relax, ask one question at a time, don't get defensive, don't respond to everyone who you feel attacks you and don't say too much about yourself. That's what people define as "talking too much". It's more about the content and speed of interaction than about the level of voice that will define "talking too much".

Re: Share your experiences~!
Why don't you write about why you want to study in finland and splash out on a house when you have never actually visited the country. Wouldn't it be prudent to visit first, see if you like the place (and the people) and then decide on such actions. at the same time you can visit the shops and check out the price of basics that you were so interested in and also see what is actually on sale here. No point being addicted to pepperidge farm cookies, Dr Pepper or marshmallows when they cost a small fortune here (if you can find them).AnnabelleIeve wrote:A habit I should probably break before my first visit to Finland...

I was only trying to get an estimate on a home. I do plan on visiting Finland most likely next year around this time or later in the year. I'm no longer too concerned with the other stuff.riku2 wrote:Why don't you write about why you want to study in finland and splash out on a house when you have never actually visited the country. Not break, tone down. If you just shut down, you won't get much social interaction here. People won't come to you, you have to reach out for new friends.AnnabelleIeve wrote:You are right, I should tone down what I say about myself and what I ask of others. I'm also highly skeptic about sharing personal information in mostly anonymous internet bulletin board. I'd say anonymous, but then Jukka would come to say something and make fool of me...

Re: Share your experiences~!
I guess the problem is that you're mostly asking questions that are rather vague ("what is Finland like?") or very impractical to answer ("how can I buy this kind of house in this area, X years in the future?"), so most of the answers you're getting are from the forum humorists. And naturally it only encourages them when you take every joke and cliché they throw at you seriously.
I really want to hear how your Finnish adventure goes, so don't get too frustrated and leave us!

Made an account on Finnishschool.com though I don't know how much I'll use it.

Re: Share your experiences~!
You obviously know jacksh*t about Finland. It's very clear in the way you write. If you come here to visit, you'll still not know anything because you'll still be just a tourist... You'll not get to know the real way of life.
You also wrote in an earlier post you didn't like the hills of snow, or hills and snow... Whatever it was.
Well.... Won't you be in for a shock when you turn up here???
THERE IS SNOW EVERYWHERE EVERY WINTER HERE...... From the bottom to the top of the country. And no, it's not just a few flurries of snow in the bottom of the country. It's full on hardcore snow.
You seem to be rather delusioned or something.

Re: Share your experiences~!
Jesus....
Who knows even if you'll even get into school. You act like it'll be a breeze.... When the reality is 100's apply for like 10 positions in schools. And it's getting harder all the time. But you don't want to hear the realities of the situation, do you? Just positive great things..... Ie, not reality. Would it not be better to be informed of the difficulties of the situation, rather than live in a cloud?
How real can fake snow be? In what temperature was this fake snow? 30 degrees celcius or something? LOL. Completely different thing to snow here. You'll love it when the snow is coming down hard and fast sideways hitting you in the eyes, making them sting like hell. Or walking on the ice which is created when the snow melts and then the temperature drops.... Slipping several times because you haven't learned how to do the winter walking style.... Then you'll rethink.... Yes, I knew what snow felt like.
And again, you are wrong. Not all the weather in Finland is awful. The most horrible time of the year here is Autumn after the beautiful colours are all gone and it's just dark all day, raining and raining.... No snow, very little sunshine..... Just dark and miserable. Finland happens to have in general very nice summers. We just had over 30 celcius yesterday. That's normally hotter than England gets for instance. And when the snow does fall, even if it's -30 celcius, it's still very pretty. And Spring, once the flowers start growing and the trees turn green again, it's very pretty. But yes, there can be !"#¤% years of weather too.
Avalanches are almost non existant in Finland..... We have only Fell Mountains here. Something else you probably didn't know.
No, not all Finns are reserved. It is infact beginning to change as more and more younger people spend a lot of time travelling abroad and are around the growing population of foreigners....
Yes, you stated in an earlier post you were going to come here to visit next year.... That would make you a tourist, not a student.
Don't bother replying to me if you are just going to be childish calling people 'dick'. Nice way to insult the people you want to come and live off.... (free schooling). My taxes and fellow workers' taxes who will be paying for your schooling.

Re: Share your experiences~!
That is for sure. And your knowledge is going to get better and better. When you get harsh answers, you'll get them so you don't have some rosy dream in your mind.AnnabelleIeve wrote:I know more than the average person knows about Finland.
Being tourist will give you some idea, but you are right that the reality of living here will become apparent when you live here. You can gather information beforehand, but it will only make the culture shock less harsh, it won't go away.AnnabelleIeve wrote:I will be a tourist when I visit Finland, true. But when I go there to study, I will be student, not a tourist.
I'm sure I'll get into the swing of things during my 3-year study there.
We get some avalanches in Lappland. In towns you should keep your eyes up though, as the snow that ends up on roofs might come down. Usually the snow gets cleared before that is problem, but better to be safe than sorry: no use to tempt the luck and walk below overhanging slab of ice and snow.AnnabelleIeve wrote:I don't like mountains of snow. I was referring to a ski slope. Fear of avalanches which I'm sure there won't be in the middle of Helsinki. Lots of snow. Piles of it probably, but not avalanches.
And all the little things that come from those.AnnabelleIeve wrote:The people and the weather.
