yay - so how is she coping with the winter ?

if she takes money out of the ATM and goes to make a deposit in the bank she at least knows the money is there. for the wire transfer you need the magic numbers and someone semi-intelligent in the US end in the bank so that will take a while and chew on the nervs... I'd do both, so as to check on how long it takes and if it arrives and how fast and such as then if she has an emergency or something there is knowledge instead of thinking. also then you see what the ATM withdrawal fees are & so forth. as for food - has she ever been to a supermarket or did the domestic servants do all the shopping?

 I think you should start a new thread for this question, you will get more answers (it's lost in this one)....

IIRC, this question has been discussed several times in the past so you should get some answers :D

I think it is very like where she has been living for past two years (in Oregon) so not so bad.

Yes, that would have been me  More it's where to buy and even though there is a kitchen on her floor, she no cooking or eating utencils yet and no access to the university restaurants, so it eat out but where, or buy some bread and cheese at a market and then which market and which cheese.

The question is, has she never travelled to another country before and the answer is no. She has no coping skills, yet. That's why we sent her off to Finland, to get her out of her comfort zone (and apparently its working).

Yes, this thread is a bit long in the tooth.

I did a search but didn't find the answer (not meaning it isn't there) but some of these threads can go on and off topic for pages (depending on everyone's mood that day)!

If I go into my US bank today (Wells Fargo) and sent a wire transfer, it will cost me $20USD for the wire and the retail rate to buy Euros is $1.5503. I don't know the costs if she withdraws funds from Finnish ATM to deposit in Finnish bank account.

Finnish ATMs don´t have fees. The fee is what the American bank charges for foreign withdrawals. Ask her bank how much they charge.

Thanks, that's what I didn't know.

In the US, if you use an ATM that is not owned by your bank, that you get double fees (from your own bank for not using their atm) and from the other bank (because you are not one of their accounts).

She probably won't appreciate the comparison, but yes.

About a week before a mother moose gives birth, somewhere from late May to early June, she begins to chase away her 1-year-old calf, called a yearling. She's taught the yearling all he needs to know and it's time for him to be on his own. She may have to go as far as kicking the yearling to chase him away. These yearlings are very vulnerable at this time of year; bewildered almost. Many are hit by cars before they catch on that their mothers aren't there to watch out for them.

Isnt that unusual and harsh punishmet :D
Well she has to learn finnish markets and foods, weird food and weird names of food, trial and error id say. Well its swim or sink course and i hope she can swim :)
Btw if she needs cooking/eating stuff with cheap prize then look "kierrätyskeskus" and "kirpputori", those have 2nd hand things.

And offtopic, i hope your doughter isnt afraid of thunderstorm, there is one now :(

Only today I reminded her to look both ways before crossing the street because there may be not be laws there requiring cars to stop for pedestrians in cross walks

Back in the day, she'd be there and me here and maybe a few letters would come and go. Now there is Internet with iChat and Skype and we are practically in the same room.

She's probably hiding under her comforter right now. Is it ever going to stop raining in Tampere. Everytime I check the weather, it is rain, rain, rain!
