Onkko says:

[Voi helevetin russä. You are one who invaded finland, you are one who attacked civilians in lapland, you are one to blame.
You are one who killed my grandmothers family, what in hell 6 year old gird did to you? you executed him and his family.
You are one to blame, you attacked and you deserve whatever you got from that attack.
Pietari? oh i really hoped finnish would terminate that whole place, too bad finnish are too kind to do that. Russians are no good non believelable and almost non human.
There is no way anyone rightminded finnish would trust russian.
Buy better books and accept a fact that youre invader.
End of rant, and yes i hate russians.[/quote]

ofcourse when you buy Onkko's mökki for much more than the value you are more then welcome. :beamer:

PS I have not seen much good coming from Russia either but do not like the hypocricy of many Finns either :|

I'll just quote the first sentence:
"Because Russians are liars".
I think this sums everything pretty well...
Let's put it this way....

Which side of these conflicts has generally had it's "history" totally trumped by all other historians?
Soviet side. I think it had something to do with immense desire to have their "history" be ideologically correct.

As for why military service is considered important in Finland. While trend is towards worse direction, army still holds important part in finnish psyche.
Need to have everyone pulling their weight in protecting homeland is still rather strong. So citizen who does not pull their own weight, responsibilities, in this field but feels entitled to have all the rights of citizenship may not be quite as respected.

Feeling of responsibility is highly valued trait.

Can't remember where quote originated, but it went along these lines.

"Every nation has an army, either its own or a foreign one"

Edit: Bundeswehr advertisement was source.

I Think Iceland is one of the very few exceptions.

Liechtenstein too. Another place nobody really wants to invade.

Seeing as Hank could turn this into a family album thread, here's my grandad (on the right), bear hunting on the Karelian Isthmus during round 2:

At age 11, it was decided that young Karhunkoski should be taught how to shoot, and grandad took me and a rifle away behind the riihi for a couple of days. He certainly thought gun skills were important.

US military presence actually. I think there is base or such on northeast corner of Iceland.

Not any more. Now we have a deal with the Norwegians to protect us in case of problems :)
