Hey guys, I am a non-EU citizen and have a Finnish partner. I am now considering moving to Finland by applying for a residence permit upon the basis of an intimate relationship.
I have several questions which would like to be answered. I would be very grateful if someone helps me clarify my doubts:)
1. Person with a residence permit on the basis of an intimate relationship can work in a specialist position requiring special skills. What is the definition of "a specialist position requiring special skills"?
2. As for the income requirement, I am aware of the fact that I need to have 1,000 EURO for my monthly expenses in Finland. But I am not very sure about how long I will stay in Finland with this residence permit. Is there a cap on this income requirement?
3. I and my Finnish partner are in a relationship for less than a year; will it adversely affect my application for the residence permit?

” you will work for a maximum of 90 days”

You can apply for a shorter permit with a plan to get married soon after arrival.
Your Finnish partner can find the guidelines here:

12-13 months is the estimated processing time for a residence permit on the basis of an intimate relationship, residence permits for specialists are processed within 2 weeks.Migri wrote: You are a specialist if:
- you are coming to Finland to work in expert duties that require special expertise (highly skilled worker);
- your salary is at least EUR 3473 in 2023; and
- you have a higher education degree or have otherwise acquired the special expertise required in your work through work experience or other education.
The first residence permit is for a year, so there's a 12 month cap on the income requirement (unless you apply for a shorter period).

Thank you so much for the useful answers from you guys!! They're very helpful
it seems to me that a work permit based upon a specialist position or internship is more suitable for me

Hey, I just saw your post and figured I would try to also answer.
Depending on your citizenship, it might not be possible for you to work unless you have a permit.
As far as I know, specialist permit is only possible if you got a job in Finland. I got my specialist permit only in a week and got it because I got a job in Finland. The employer needs to give migri additional documents regarding your job etc. What is counted as specialist, I'm not too sure, but one of them are Software Engineers, Product Designers, Product Managers.
Migri will ask you for proof of relationship no matter how long the relationship has been. When we applied for my fiance, we gave them our photos together and a written statement of how we met and our plan for the future (which was marriage for us).
Hope that's useful.

There is no restriction based on citizenship for specialists.vaniaamelia wrote: ↑Mon Mar 13, 2023 2:53 pmDepending on your citizenship, it might not be possible for you to work unless you have a permit.

Yes there's no restriction for speacialist, but to get that specialist permit, you'll need to have a work contract because the company needs to add in documents from their side If OP is like me (from Indonesia for example), then they can't come to Finland to work unless they already got a job from their home country, and apply for the permit from there. Or come with a tourist visa (but not allowed to work in any field unless then again if they get a job in Finland and switch the visa to work permit)FinlandGirl wrote: ↑Tue Mar 14, 2023 11:13 amThere is no restriction based on citizenship for specialists.vaniaamelia wrote: ↑Mon Mar 13, 2023 2:53 pmDepending on your citizenship, it might not be possible for you to work unless you have a permit.

A job offer is required for any residence permit on the basis of work.vaniaamelia wrote: ↑Thu Mar 16, 2023 10:30 amYes there's no restriction for speacialist, but to get that specialist permit, you'll need to have a work contract because the company needs to add in documents from their sideFinlandGirl wrote: ↑Tue Mar 14, 2023 11:13 amThere is no restriction based on citizenship for specialists.vaniaamelia wrote: ↑Mon Mar 13, 2023 2:53 pmDepending on your citizenship, it might not be possible for you to work unless you have a permit.
A specialist who enters Finland on a tourist visa has the right to work in that job while waiting on the decision for the residence permit.vaniaamelia wrote: ↑Thu Mar 16, 2023 10:30 amIf OP is like me (from Indonesia for example), then they can't come to Finland to work unless they already got a job from their home country, and apply for the permit from there.
