Divorce after citizenship application?

Post by MandieLynn » Mon Jul 10, 2023 7:00 pm

So I submitted my citizenship application last year, after being married many years to a Finnish person and meeting all requirements (language, residency period etc). There will not be a decision made about my citizenship application for atleast another year. Unfortunately my marriage has come to an end and I expect to be officially divorced before the citizenship decision is made, since we are already more than halfway through the harkinta-aika. Does anyone know how this will affect my application or the decision? I applied based off family ties, and currently unemployed but trying very hard to find a job after graduating in March. There was abuse so it's not safe for me to try to reconcile.

Any advice is appreciated, thank you.

Then divorce or unemployment is not a problem for citizenship. As long as you can show how you supported yourself.

Even though I applied based on family ties? Though, when I applied we were married. I'm on benefits while looking very hard for a job. I'm just worried the divorce or being on kela benefits will get me a negative decision. If what you said is true, that is a relief.
