For those who applied in a different country than their own and received it via courier, did the VFS centre contact you before sending it to you or they will just automatically mail it to your address? Also how long it took?

For first time RP:

Was the start date on your card the same as the moving date you put in your application?

We put a moving date of 1 April 2025.

But we got a positive decision today saying the permit starts today?! We are waiting for the card to see what date is on it.

We thought Migri would use that moving date they ask for in application… we are waiting but a bit confused.

We are not moving earlier because of work contract and we live together abroad already.


It is ok but not ideal to loose time from permit.

I can confirm that when I was granted my first residence permit (applied outside Finland), the start date of the permit was the date of the decision. I arrived in Finland about a month after that.

Not sure we understand why they ask when you are moving then. We thought that was the important date.

No one knows when decision will be…strange to us that is the date picked.

Send them an email to ask for the justification. Based on the answer you can try an appeal to have them move the date forward to the requested date. Could just be a mistake.

I can confirm that when I was granted my first residence permit (applied outside Finland), the start date of the permit was the date of the decision. I arrived in Finland about a month after that.

That's weird. It would be inconvenient. Particularly to people who apply for their RP long in advance since some permits are only valid for one year. In my case, for example, I would potentially lose up to seven months of the permit before even arriving in Finland, which is really unfortunate.

It's normal. When you extend permit, they'd give you longer period usually.
