New to the Finland Forum – Excited to Connect and Learn!

Post by Abelnicholas » Tue Oct 01, 2024 7:30 pm

Hi everyone,

I’m new to the Finland Forum and thrilled to be part of this community! I’ve recently developed an interest in Finland, its culture, and its beautiful landscapes. I’m eager to connect with locals and fellow enthusiasts to learn more about this wonderful country.

Here are a few topics I’m particularly interested in:

Travel Tips: What are some must-visit places in Finland, especially for first-time visitors? I’d love to hear about your recommendations!

Cultural Insights: Any insights into Finnish customs, traditions, or local festivals that are worth experiencing?

Language Learning: As I’m looking to learn Finnish, any tips on language resources or methods that have worked well for you would be greatly appreciated.

Lifestyle and Living: I’m curious about the lifestyle in Finland—what’s it like living here? Any advice for newcomers?

I appreciate any insights you can share, and I’m looking forward to connecting with everyone and sharing our experiences!

Thank you for the warm welcome!

Best,

Well nice to see anyone so eager to get to know more about this racist / foreigner hating / self destructive / hidden corruption / nepotism ridden / discriminating country.

You will notice when you are here, that if it is clear to others (Finns) you are not planning to stay here and you are here to spend money, they will be your best friend until your money is gone.

The country is one of the most expensive in Europe when it comes to food and gasoline.

The nature is fantastic although exploited and sold to the highest bidder which are mostly (partly) foreign owned corporations only interested in making lots of money at the expense of said nature, several good examples recently with destroying of nature endangered species by foresting companies.

But to not totally discourage you from visiting here, I would advice to come by car, drive through Estonia and take the ferry in Tallinn to Helsinki and make a road trip from south to north and do this in summer (july). When you get in the north to the Swedish border, cross it and drive down through Sweden back to Denmark and further to wherever you come from. You will see a lot of trees, cities, villages, forests and bad roads.
Try to avoid pubs outside of Helsinki center, the rural communities are in general not so exciting and have all their local drunks that smell foreigners money quickly only to beg for booz once they found you.

Well at least that is my experience in the past decades, luckily I found some exceptions here and there but they are sparse and more prevalent in Helsinki than any other place.

For cultural purposes, a visit to Helsinki might be nice, if you are into that sort of city trip, but beware of the prices of everything..take a filled wallet with you otherwise you will be stranded very soon.

I do not want to sound pessimistic but see myself more as a realist, however others have different experiences so maybe some more positive post 7 reply will follow mine...

I will leave room now for the next more positive replies from others...

Best of luck!
