I will not despair...
I will not despair...
This morning's lesson in Finnish:
Rusakko - brown hare (I knew that)
Rusakka - brownish yellow reindeer (no, I did not know that)
Russakka - German cockroach (I had heard but would prefer to forget)
ARGH!!
I have lived here for some time, and I am a native, but sometimes I have the urge to just drop everything and run away.
Now, boys and girls, forget I said that and get on with your Finnish homework.

Yeah, but at least those are words you might not need too often - I think the real challenges for the learner of Finnish are separating and remembering the conugations for jäädä and jättää, päästä and päästtää etc etc...
And then remembering the passive and active forms for the transitive and intransitive verbs, and when to use each....

True, very true. Not many reindeer in my neck of the woods. But picture the look on people's faces if I were to say I found cockroach pawprints in the snow, or, worse still, a hare in my foodstuffs...soda wrote:Yeah, but at least those are words you might not need too often - I think the real challenges for the learner of Finnish are separating and remembering the conugations for jäädä and jättää, päästä and päästtää etc etc...

Do you know what "rusistiikka" is ? I had no idea what it means, maybe I should have guessed but I didn´t. It is one of the words here :Nassebox wrote:This morning's lesson in Finnish:

I suppose it means Russian Studies, but it's not a word you'd come across all that often.

Pieni Tietosanakirja ( Little Encyclopedia ) at : http://runeberg.org/pieni/
4 volumes ( 1925-1928 )
old but interesting !
See what it says about "rustiikka" ( yes, I mean "rustiikka" )
http://runeberg.org/pieni/3/0745.html
I have a very modest vocabulary. Both "rusistiikka" and "rustiikka" were new words to me.

Rustiikka was new to me too... and after reading the entry you referred to I suddenly felt that old, old urge to drop everything and run, screaming like a banshee...
