I decided to make my own site about Finnish. I let my (Finnish) boyfriend proof-read it, so I hope there's not too many mistakes. He doesn't have a clue about grammar issues though, so there might be mistakes in that.

Please e-mail me if you find things that aren't the way they should be!

I'd make the Finnish page the default. Your first page isn't very inspiring and if I hadn't been looking specifically for a Finnish page, I doubt I would have given it a second glance. The Finnish page is nice.

There's a lot of good content on the site but the design isn't that great.

Here are some suggestions:
- Change the font. Monospace fonts are only good for computer code
- use bigger left and top margins
- the color scheme could be better, especially the grey bg color in the top frame looks kinda ugly
- your site should have a name, and the name should be displayed at least in the top frame
- The text should be in a narrower column. About 80 characters/line is enough, anything more is hard to read
- the buttons on the left would look better if they had some kind of visible borders, or in other words, if they looked more like buttons

You should take a look at Phil's site for example: http://www.finlandforthought.net/
It's very easy on the eyes and obeys the rules of good web design.

I hope this helps

It's just that I know NOTHING about making websites... I made this with powerpoint. I thought it didn't matter; after all, isn't content more important than looks?

But you are right of course, it could look better. I'll see whether I can make it more pleasing to the eye ;)

Phil is using WordPress. If you use something like that, you'll look like a professional, too. Get it free here: http://wordpress.org/

Content may be more important but looks are very important as well. You don't have to have any eye-candy or any cool effects and tricks. Actually, simplicity is beautiful. That's why Google is so popular.

Mostly websites that look good lack content. This one is good in that it has good content.

Of course, it is a bit ugly right now - that font really needs to change - but small improvements and it'll be just right. The plus side of it is that it "works" which is also something many of these "beautiful" sites lack - functionality.

Ok, the HTML is "clean" which is a very good - extremely good start. Now if you want to do WYSIWYG I warmly recommend downloading the mozilla offshoot NVU from http://www.nvu.com/ -it doesn't handle framesets that good, but you can get the content done easily and it generates W3C "standard" (which is so rare these days)

Oh, and do something with your email address - like take it off and scramble it with javascript or anything. The direct mailto: will be spambotted - probably is already and your hotmail account will be spammed to hell in 48 hours: never put an email on your page clearly like that!
Cheers, Hank W.

As opposed to sites that look bad? If by "good" you mean flashy, I agree though. But like I said earlier, simple is beautiful.

Thanks for the NVU tip Hank, I~ve been looking for an alternative to my current editor that only allows me to edit html

well put. Many of those shiny piece of =)(/& are also expensive (commercial).
I was recently told off by a nice looking and informative company website because my brand new firefox was, apparently, "deeply outdated" according to the gif their code monkeys had redirected me to...that is insulting.

If someone is looking for free hosting with worldpress software try http://www.blogsome.com , you can use Phil's or Red tail's templates, upload and create files and do not need to call it a blog

EDIT: more themes at http://www.blogsome.com/wordpress-themes.php
