things i need to do asap....

hi
i moved to helsinki on friday..any tips advice on things i need to do asap llike bank acc,social security,registering etc..also i'm trying to find work in english speaking pre schools,english families etc..big thing is looking for a finnish language course.would be nice to meet fellow expats here too...

get your residents permit

get your Kela card for social security etc

get your tax code/card

Welcome to Finland!

I assume you've already had your permit to stay? Go to the magistrate to get yourself a security number. Once you've a security number, you can apply for a Kela card, open a bank account, get a tax card, etc.

no i havent registered yet...i only moved on friday and still getting settled.what do i need to bring with me when i register?is it a big thing or just a formality?

Hi,
I've just finished all registration process so I write what I did:

1. police station - residence permit
2. local register office - id number (temporary status)
3. bank - bank account
4. tax office - tax card
5. kela - social security

if needed:
5. travel card
6. parking permit

after some weeks
1. local register office - permanent registration status
2. police station - id card

Hope you can find more information (where/how to apply for them) about the residence permit, security number, tax card, etc:

1. Residence permit : http://www.uvi.fi/
2. Local register office - Helsinki Magistrate
3. Tax card - http://www.vero.fi/default.asp?language ... RO_ENGLISH
4. Kela - http://www.kela.fi/in/internet/english.nsf

Once you get a security number, give VERO (tax office) a call - 010 320 560 (English language).

Why do you all need KELA card ?

I am here for 15 months now, I have residence permit, SSN, tax -office things and bank account.

If you can tell me how does KELA card helps, I will get one as well.

I've been here for exactly 13 months today, got my residence permit last year and I've just applied for a KELA card yesterday!

Cool. So we came around same time(exactly 15 months today, landed on 4th Oct,2004), but the question still remains. What benefits does KELA card gives ? and how much is the application fee for it ?

I actually don't really know much about the benefits KELA's offering (neither does my BF). People at work told me it's better to have a KELA card. So there I went to KELA office near my place yesterday.

The KELA lady told me - We'll make the decision if you're qualified for a KELA card. I hold a Type A permit. It will take a month for the application to be processed and the card costs 25€.

Thanks for the link. What I can gather from the site is that it is mainly for social security things. For eg - Pensions, unempolyment money, maternity benefit , etc...

According to the criteria mentioned in the website, you should be getting it fairly easily.

Since I don't intend to stay here for long (not till retirement and such), I don't need it.

If you qualify to KELA, why not get it? Even if you are not interested at pensions and stuff, you will have access also to refund on medicine purchased with a prescription, refund with medical expenses, etc.
