Speech varieties.... do you mean accents as opposed to dialects??? Or different types of English???

Try:

The Stories of English - David Crystal (2004)
The Story of English - Robert McCrum et al (1986)
The Adventure of English - Melvyn Bragg (2003)

all the above also have bibliographies with tons more references.

Also "English: history, diversity and change" by David Graddol, Dick Leith and Joan Swann.
