World Cup Final

Post by antarctica_moon » Mon Jul 10, 2006 2:12 am

Wonderful game - but what a sad way for a great player like Zidane to leave the sport.

I wonder what Marco Materazzi said to him?

If Zidane had been around for PKs would the end result have been different?

I doubt the results will be different, but at least France can lose with diginity. What Materazzi said isn't really that relevant. Zidane just destroyed the image he built over the years as one of the greatest players, commentators talk about how great Zidane is in every game he played in this world cup, and now he is retiring in shame.

Ok, as I am Italian I am not maybe the best person entitled to write in this topic. But yes, what Materazzi said isn't really important, because Zidane could have reacted in a much better way.
Unluckily, Materazzi is quite famous for being a "warm head", but still Zidane acted the way he shouldn't have.
In any case, winning at PKs isn't exactly the best way to win a World Championship.

I disagree with both of you. If someone makes racist remarks to you (and the Italians are well known for their racist football crowds, many French players in Italian clubs have complained of racism from Italian players) or insults your dying mother then maybe, just maybe in the heat of the moment and the pressure of extra time, only a few days after the death of a close friend, mentor and coach, just maybe your emotions get the better of you. He is only human after all. That doesn't excuse him but it does help to explain an outburst from a man usually known for his shyness and discretion. Nobody will ever forget that red card, and I doubt very much if Zidane will sell his story to the Sun or the Daily Mail, but I think his fans will forgive him.

BTW, Zidane was voted player of the tournament. Where's the shame in that.

Having lived in Spain for most of my life, in the last 5 years or so I've seen quite a bit of Zidane at Real Madrid, and have seen that frustrated streak in him before, so i wasnt that surprised at what happened.

As far as someone insulting u on the pitch...these are professionals, and know how to rise above such things, or at least they should, after nearly 15 years of playing in front of thousands live and millions via tv every week.

When they're used to winning as much as Zidane and others are, it's hard to accept somone being better, thus frustration...
What is a juggalo?... ;)

I agree. He played in Juventus and he did exactly the same thing already once. They all (even Italian players) aren't any kids playing football in their neighbourhood's streets. They are used professionals, so they all shouldn't react like animals.
But this is what fame, money and success can cause.

I know he's a professional, but it's only human to snap like that...

Although neither player has yet revealed the nature of their disagreement, Fantastico, a programme on Globo, employed lip-reading experts who said footage of the incident showed the Italian twice insulted Zidane's sister.

The programme claimed Materazzi made the same comment twice before then using a "coarse word" at the French player.

...
Zidane has not given his account of the incident, but there have also been reports Materazzi had called him a "terrorist" or suggested he did not have the right to play for France -- both insults based on French-born Zidane's Algerian heritage.

Materrazzi 'insulted Zidane's sister'

By: ThinkSpain

According to lip-reading experts consulted by the Brazilian TV company Globo, Marco Materazzi called Zinedine Zidane's sister a "prostitute" twice, leading to the headbutt that saw the French captain sent off in the second period of extra-time, shortly before the penalty shootout.

On the 'Fantastico' programme last night, the experts insisted that, after tugging Zidane's shirt, he insulted his sister twice, prompting the Frenchman to take the law into his own hands. It was an ugly, disturbing way to end an illustrious career and a superb tournament, and one which left a sour taste in the mouth of football fans across the globe, especially after he snubbed the medal-giving ceremony.

Despite the incident, Zidane was named player of the tournament for his previous performances in a vote that took place before last night's final

Indeed. But this victory makes it up for the defeat in the final in 1994 and the defeat in the semifinal in 1990. Both lost with PK.

Italiano anch'io. :)

It amazes me how different versions of what Materazzi said where running around in the press without any possible support. He could as well make racist statments although his best friend at Inter is Martins (Nigerian player).

Zidane is (was) a great player but he was also know for his tempers, here's some of his misdeeds

According to that article, Materazzi said to Zidane that his sister is a prostitute and that he is a "dirty terrorist" and that he shouldn't play for France because his origins are in Algeria.

Zidane is usually mr. Fair Play, but occasionally he just loses his temper. Materazzi on the other hand is well known for his aggressive stunts.
