REPENTANCE
The story of the opera Repentance is based on historical events of the last years of the 16th century and the early years of the 17th century, when boyar Boris Godunov became a Tsar of Russia. His amazing destiny from the assistant of Tsar Ivan the Terrible to Emperor of the whole Russia is peerless. It is closely linked with the strange death of Crown Prince Dmitry, who died in the city of Uglich on 15th May 1591. The people of Russia accused Godunov about conspiracy against Dmitry and never forgave him - although suicide was noted as the official cause of death.
All these things might have been forgotten, if strange things a few years afterwards had not happened: Crown Prince Dmitry re-appeared in Moscow and reigned Russia in after the death of Boris Godunov. Conscience never left Godunov alone and he suffered all his life about this tragedy. He started to avoid people and in the end he lived as a hermit. Godunov died suddenly in 1605, which was caused by the information about reappearance.
Godunov´s tragedy was fictionalized by famous Russian poet Alexander Pushkin. Russian composer Modest Musorgski based his great opera Boris Godunov upon Pushkin´s play. In the opera Repentance we will hear music of other Russian composers, too (see below).
