Wasn't sure where to post this....
I want to ask the native Finns out there a question. I just came back from a walk in our neighborhood and when I turned a corner I saw a flag at half mast in the yard of a house I usually walk by. There were more cars than usual in the driveway too. I don't know who lives there, but I have noticed that a young family lives there. I have no idea what happened, no idea who they are, but I was taken aback when I saw the flag, and actually got teary, since I have had a death in my extended family recently.
I really felt like just dropping a short note of condolence into their mailbox. My Finnish is choppy, and I could better express myself in English. My question: is it too forward to send a card like this? I would just sign it 'Your Neighbor' Would they be offended in any way, esp if it's in English? I just would be honest and caring....
Thanks for your quick reply. I would like to do this today...

Sending a card of condolence (question for Finns)
They would not be offended. (Why would they?) They would just wonder a little when a person they don´t know does that. They could also think that you are a nice person to notice. And they would not be offended by the use of English, but there is always a possibility that they don´t understand English.
You can buy a nice card, start it is Finnish by writing "osanottoni", add "my condolences"
