[kotitehtävä] tarvitsen apua...

Post by Elyria » Wed Nov 08, 2006 8:05 pm

I have to write a text for tomorrow, for my "write'n speak" finnish lesson, but the problem is I don't have the slightest idea of how to say ""after" + passive verbal form". :?

E.g : Söin. Sitten menin ulos.

What should I use ? A passive possessive form with partitive or "jälkeen " + something ?
Is "Syötyäni menin ulos" correct ?

Kiitos etukäteen !

Well, you shouldn't use a space between the last word of a sentence and the punctuation mark.

Yes. You could also say "kun olin syönyt, menin ulos" or replace "menin" with "lähdin".

You can also say, "Syömisen jälkeen menin ulos".

"Syömisen jälkeen" is grammatically correct but I do not think that anybody would say that. "Syötyäni" sounds much better.

Hmmm... yes... I remember using "syönnin jälkeen" quite a lot actually, not "correct" but... Can't remember where I picked it up - these things can be regional... "syötyäni" sounds rather literate to me actually, I wouldn't use it in everyday language... I'd say "kun olin syönyt..." (i.e. kummääolinsyäny :)) instead.

I am also familiar with "syönnin jälkeen" and it sounds all right to me. "Syömisen jälkeen" sounds to me like "after the act of eating".

Pyyton? Does it nowadays have a Finnish way of writing?

I believe that it has always had a Finnish way of writing .

The dictionary here http://www.cs.tut.fi/~jkorpela/siv/laaja.html had this to say about "pyyton" :
>> pyton [pyytton tai pyyton] eräitä jättiläiskäärmeitä (suku Python ja yleisemmin alaheimo Pythoninae) ¶ Virallinen kirjoitusasu lyhytvokaalinen. Joskus myös sitaattilainana kirjoitettu: python. Tieteellinen nimi tulee kirjoittaa Python.
pyyton = pyton <<

Finns pronounce "pyton" as "pyytton" or "pyyton". No one says "pyton".

The official spelling ( virallinen kirjoitusasu) is "pyton".

Incidentally, I've heard this word used in a diffrent context, not referring to snakes at all... in spoken language, "vääntää pyyttonit"...

... erm... refers to "laying cable"

I'd also write python... in spoken language it's usually "pyytton"...
