TEK is an union. YTK is an unemployment fund.

Hank, thx for your answers. As i see the annual fees are a little bit different: 65 for YTK, 282 for TEK.

So, what really useful can be taken from TEK for this additionally 217 euros?

Well, its a *union*.... and a bit of a gentlemens club as it only takes M.Sc. as a member, as it says both professional stuff as well as union stuff. So if you are 'eligible' I'd join it as it is for "those engineers that are better than some engineers" ;) I belong to tradenomiliitto, just because it is "my people" so to speak. You know, networking, jobs etc. me rub you rub back rub... (and I belong to that same IEAT unemployment fund the "better" engineers belong to).

Anyways, 1.1. join *something*. if you're still pondering atleast the YTK. Once you decide you can change your membership to wnatever so then you need tow have that 10 months contributions (the YTK pages explain the system).

Hank,

Thanks for the information above: it was quite useful. I'm trying to find information about TYK in English, but there is no English link on their website. Do you know of an alternative version in this language?

So they taken the English away. Seems to be a step backwards:) Never mind, I got my wife to translate the pages and I joined yesterday.

Thank you for your comments!

The fee for YTK is 65 per calendar year, whether you join in january of november... so now isnt such a bad time to join.

If you're a foreigner with poor Finnish skills and you think that you could be shat on, abused, short-paid or sacked without notice, I would recommend you join a union - at least then you have some legal support if things turn sticky brown for you.

Maybe they got too popular - knowing how well jobs bite the nose off people  But shame, they used to have a very well written page on the "how stuff works"...

I would love to reply, but fear someone might highlight a 2 euro inaccuracy in the level of services offered

For an extra 16 euros a year YTK offers lawyers services or "oikeusturvavakuutuksen"
