How do you learn Finnish rections?

Post by trentti » Sat Jan 27, 2007 4:12 pm

One of the more challenging things I've found in the Finnish language so far is the rections (rektiot), ie what case goes with which word. I have a helpful book by Hannele Jönsson-Korhola and Leila White called 'Tarkista tästä : suomen sanojen rektioita', which has the rections for about 1200 words.
I was wondering how other people have learnt them - is it just a case of learning by heart?

Same as in English:

you look AT something
you read ABOUT something
you wait FOR something/one
you believe IN something
you sympathise WITH someone
you depend ON someone
you approve OF something
you suffer FROM something

etc

how did you learn which prepositions follow which verbs....?

...you probably just learnt them as a "chunk" of language. So yes, I guess you learn them off by heart, but in a passive, subconscious kind of way. There is occasionally some logic in there if you look hard enough.

Finns have as much difficulty learning which prepositions follow which verbs/adjectives as non-Finns do learning the rektiot.

I'm not good with inflection tables and rules, so I prefer learning whole phrases (collocations).

Yeah I know what you mean.

It's odd sometimes. Somestimes I really need to think about the right ending of words, and sometimes I just dont think about it all and I go "that can't have been right, where did I get that from ??" and then I ask someone and they say it was completely correct.

Funny finns.

Nothing very comforting, but I learned them by screwing
them up as much as humanly possible at first and provoking
fits of laughter in Finns.

But I really like the Tarkista tästä book and find it's been one
of my better buys. There's also a version out for Estonians btw.

Rections... I used to study Finnish at a university level. And I was used to it until they finally kicked me out. I have a slight recollection of the term.

It had something to do with Language. Or is it one of the latest inventions to misguide us poor speakers to feel ashamed of our progression?

A quote:
" 'Tarkista tästä : suomen sanojen rektioita', which has the rections for about 1200 words.
[....]
I was wondering how other people have learnt them - is it just a case of learning by heart?"

There's a new hobby! I shall (it's a promise to be kept) buy the book and learn it by heart. This will give me superior authority among the natives to piss everyone singularly off!

Rection. Were I a medical student, might as well try to perform it to me.

Do not worry about rections of the masses. We are a forgiving little people.

:)

Well, I was going to say that I introduce myself first and then get to work acquainting myself with the Finnish rection...

On a serious note, I find myself remembering what the rektio is in English (like I found it from the shelf) and then listen closely to Finns when they speak and just try and remember them. Slowly, but surely, it starts to become second nature. A lot of native-English speakers who have been knocking around Finland for hundreds of years, but have still neglected to learn the language, tend to use Finnish rektioita when speaking English. This, I find funny... ;)

In the states I would never say "here you go", but there I go again with the "here you go".
