I have soooo many questions....Where to begin....
Wow, am I ever glad I found this place.

Ok well, I'm a Canadian of Finnish decent, and I really really really want to move to Finland, or at least go there for as long as possible, but I have no idea how to even begin.
Is it as difficult a process as I've been told it is????
help!!

Depends on the method you use to come here. If you are married to a Finnish person, it is easy. If you have a job or student place here, easy. If non of the above applies, then not so easy. Make a search in this forum first, so you can have some idea. There's a lot of useful information on this matter.

ok, I found the job thread, but I still am not sure where to locate possible job postings.
I speak maybe 30 words of Finnish, but I'm doing everything possible to master it, including taking involuntary lessons from Granny, as well as the ones I have to pay for.
I know it's not going to be easy, but I do plan on learning it.

Depending on how recent your Finnish roots are (= at least one grandparent who was a Finnish citizen by birth), you can simply pander to the inbuilt racism of the Finnish return migration programme. Then all you need to do is express a "sincere" wish to come "back" to the "Old Country". It does not matter whether this wish is an informed declaration of intent. There is no requirement for you to speak the language or even to be able to locate Finland on a map of Northern Europe. Finnish character is irrelevant: your biological origin is all that counts.Jenna wrote:Wow, am I ever glad I found this place.

oh wow Daryl, are you serious?
Both my grandparents are straight outta Finland.
My grandma was actually pregnant with my dad when they moved here, he was about one month away from being born over there as well.
The thing is, is that i DO want to live in the old country.
My best feature, as far as I'm concerned, is the fact that I'm Finnish.
Don't get me wrong, I love Canada, but I'm not drawn to it in the same way.
The Finnish culture is also by far, the lovliest I've ever come across.
I'm so proud of my Finnish heritage that it often brings me to tears.
Pretty much everyone who knows me is guilty of saying "oh Jenna, you're such a Finn"
And also, I'm getting pretty friggin tired of having to drive 2 hours to the closest real sauna.
If what you're saying is true, you may have just become the highlight of my life.

Daryl always offers accurate and sincere information, so you can rely on that. Basically, if you are determined that you want to come in Finland and make a life in here, you will succeed. We are not North Korea (you might find other opinions on that too, heh), so when organizing your immigration, make sure that you have means to support yourself (job, husband, lots of inherited money, etc.), there should be no serious problems. Only bureaucracy.
Also, even though we are way different from American & Canadian culture, we are not utopia either. We have high tax rate, lots of grumpy people and cold&wet winters (you probably are used on those in Canada), we also have good sides too, like pure nature, safe society and good school & health care system (explaining high tax rate).
When you apply residence permit, there will be interview on Finland's embassy in your country, where they will ask many questions (about job, education, family ties, etc.) so be prepared for those.

Yes but no. Jenna can go to http://www.uvi.fi and read about the requirements of getting a Finnish nationality. As in "Finnish passport". After that she can move in just t as a local. Now if she is cursed/blessed with a Finnish surname as well, then the inherent racism in the system cometh evident, as she has funny papers, funny accent, "trying to pass as a foreigner"... and all that. But the granny-clause makes her not *need* to get a residence permit if shge can get citizenship. Now if she was a Jaakko then the little issue regarding 6 months in a tent with an assault rifle might be a hindrance. But yes. Read the link.
Cheers, Hank W.
