Strange question?

Post by kawamotokid » Fri Mar 30, 2007 4:22 am

How do you say.."Will you marry me" in Finnish?

May be a strange question but I have heard of a few ways to say it and want to see what the general way is.

Needless to say I met the perfect girl for me and she also happens to hail from Finland!

Any help would be greatly received and once I pop the question I will let you know what she says!..

Thanks for the help in advance.

Strange question?

Well, the literal translation is "menetkö naimisiin kanssani" but that's a bit... erm... aloof so I think no-one says that... I'd say rather rely on the old "tuletko vaimokseni" line (will you be my wife)

However I have no personal experience of this yet so maybe you should rely on some married person rather than me

Tuletko vaimokseni? (トゥレ トゥッコ ヴァイモクセニ) is the most common
one. You can also say tuletko トゥレ ッコ :)

Congrats :)

Political correctness is the belief that it's possible to pick up a turd by the clean end.

Okay, so just for my amusement, how would one say "Will you marry me?" to a man. (In the rare occasion that a woman does this, or hey, even a man, haha). Would it be: Tuletko miekseni?

If you're asking Hank, ask "haluatko kärsiä, tässä ja nyt ja iankaikkisesti?"

Erm... dunno :)

But yeah, you're on the right track - just a slight correction: "tuletko miehekseni" would be the correct spelling.

I guess it could be done in Kaurismäki style:

-mennäänkö naimisiin.
(pause)
-mennään vaan.
(another pause)
-selvä.

That sounds more normal.

It might indeed - even for a native like me!

I'm afraid that, despite going through the motions in me head a zillion times, when the time is right to ask The Question, all I'll be able to actually utter is something like "gnääf."
