Home Birth

Post by Hmag » Sat Apr 28, 2007 4:20 pm

Hi,

Does anyone know someone (midwife etc) who are qualified to attend homebirth in Helsinki? I'm really interested in giving birth at home but information is hard to come by on this topic, it seems.

Thanks!
H

Hi,
I found a web site for Aktiivinen synnytys ry (active birth)(http://www.lapsiperhe.net/aktiivinensyn ... usivu.php3) and they had some information also on home births. It all seems to be in Finnish but in the articles section (artikkelit) they had a couple of articles on home birth. They did say that there aren't many midwives who are prepared to deliver babies at home, however there were some available. Maybe this organisation could give you more information?

Hi,

Thanks jhnn. I checked the website but I couldn't find any English articles.... They have links to English pages but that won't help me much.

I'll call the organization to find out more but in the meantime if anyone has more info regarding home birth in Finland I'd really appreciate it.

Home births are pretty rare in Finland, so that's one reason why there isn't much information online. But the Aktiivinen synnytys ry is the best place to ask, so do call them!

I found one story, though: http://gamma.nic.fi/~hirvoset/homebirth.htm
and I'm sure there are more, but I was too lazy to google further. :)

I concur with contacting the Aktiivinen synnyttäjät ry. There was a home birthing in Finland documentary on tv a few years back. They might have info on that.

Thank you RA, CH. CH, I did come across the webpage you linked. I e-mailed her and she referred me to a friend of hers but this person hasn't replied yet. I will call the Active Birth society...

HMAG,

Would love to hear what you found out from the Active Birth Society. I don't know that I will do a home birth since I live a half hour from the nearest hospital, and other details. But that is my ideal and so I am trying to find out everything I can about having an active birth in the hospital and getting support for that from my partner and the staff. I live in Lapinjarvi, a village not far from Porvoo and Loviisa. I would love to know if you know of any good birth classes or how to find out this info. Also, do you know of any doulas?

Thanks for your assistance,
Sally A

I know of the lady who was in the homebirth documentary. I will ask if I can give her other info out to you. I too had a homebirth in the states and a hospital birth here in Finland. You are right it is kind of tricky, but not impossible.

I AM CURRENTLY LIVING IN THE STATES AND TWO YEARS AGO I HAD A MIDWIFE HERE AND I LOVED IT. BUT IN NOV/07 IM MOVING TO VAASA, FINLAND AND I AM NOW 4 MONTHS PREGNANT. I WOULD HATE TO HAVE MY BABY IN A HOSPITAL AND I ALSO DONT KNOW HOW THE COST WILL BE. IF ANY ONE HAS ANY INFORMATION ON THE STEPS I SHOULD TAKE AS SOON AS I GET TO FINLAND SO I CAN GET MATERNITY CARE OR FIND A MIDWIFE I WOULD REALLY APPRECIATE IT!!!!!!
