Baby Chicken Pox

Post by przejoan » Wed May 09, 2007 11:49 pm

Hi, hoping for some advice from anyone who has experienced this!

My 5 month old baby has just come down with a really bad case of chicken pox, caught from his 3 year old brother who had it 2 weeks ago. He is a fully breastfed baby, and contrary to what I have been told (that he wouldn't catch the pox because of immunity passed through the breastmilk, and if he did catch it he would have a really mild case) - he has got a far worse case than his brother had - he is totally covered from head to toe, with one pock practically on top of the next... He is suffering a lot, and I wonder if anyone has any advice on how to ease this for him, or any information at all about how babies go through this.

Thanks in advance!

My second son had a terrible case of chicken pox when he was 7months old even though he had been breast fed. If you have KELA then you should call the terveysneuvonta number 10023 and ask if it is OK to take your baby into the healthclinic, they might not want you to take him in as it is so contagious. If you don't have KELA then call a private clinic like Diacor and ask them. My baby's chicken pox was so severe that he was put on Zovirax but that is not usually given to babies.

Is your baby on any other kind of medication? Are you using any kind of cream or lotion on his skin? DO NOT give him anything containing any form of cortisone as that will make the virus flare up badly.

You need to get him seen by a doctor.

You need a doctor. Call here: http://www.doctagon.fi/doctagon/housecall-fi.html

It says that all their doctors speak Finnish, Swedish and English. The number is at the bottom of the page. They make house calls.
