Hei!
I'm gonna be a daddy in November (hurray for me!) and I've heard that fathers in finnland have the right to take 3 weeks of holiday after the child is born.
It's our first and we have no idea about how babies work, so that would help, since and there´s no parents or relatives around...
Anybody know if this is true? Is it really 3 weeks? do I have to take 3 weeks at once, or can I also take 2 weeks then and 1 week for christmas?
Anybody ever taken this holiday?
Also: How is the empoyers attitude towards this? Will I be fired if I ask for this holiday, or is it something normal? Will that make me look like a slacker or is it ok? I know that in other countries emploers would probably not be happy.....
Thanks!
Papu
Isyysloma - Holiday for dads
My husband just had his isyysloma last month and sure u can keep it and its very normal, your work place cannot tell u that u cant have it. u just inform kela few days before u start it and u decide when u gonna keep it and i think it should be 3 weeks at once (18 working days and they count saturdays) u will get around 70% from ur payment and kela pays it(u do not get any money from the work place) kela will give u a paper to fill and they dont pay it in advance, but just the next day after the loma is over.
Good luck!!
Good luck!!
Check this Kela link.
You get 3 weeks, which can be kept in maximum 4 parts (so yes, you can take 2+1 weeks "isyyslomaa"). As the previous posters have said, this is a benefit granted by law, so the emloyer has to give it to you, and they can't fire you. Now, there are employers who might give you a hard time about it, but shame on them! But I'm sure most fathers take at least some of the leave, although not all take all of the leave. And check with your employer, some do pay "full pay" (well, the part that is left between what Kela pays and your monthly salary), just like some pay for full pay during maternity leave (well, it is much more common for maternity leave, though).
There is also the extended paternity allowance. If you keep the last two weeks of the parental leave, you will get 2 bonus paternity weeks. They just changed how you can keep them (previously they had to come right after the parental leave), and I'm really not familiar with the new system, but check with Kela!

Re: Isyysloma - Holiday for dads
3 weeks? What a crap. In Iceland you get something around 3 months...
Re: Isyysloma - Holiday for dads
Well yes, but as far as I have understood, those 3 months are actually parental leave that has been ear marked for the dad, right? According to this link, it's 3 months for mom, 3 months for dad, and 3 months that can be shared amongst mom and dad. But I didn't quite get it if those ear marked days can be used at the same time (so mom and dad would be home together for 3 months).Ellah wrote:3 weeks? What a crap. Here we have maternal leave 105 work days (can't be bothered to count what it is exactly in months), paternal leave 3 weeks (to be taken when mom is on maternal or parental leave) + 2 bonus weeks, and parental leave 158 work days, that can be shared among mom and dad. So here, dad can take the whole parental leave.
Re: Isyysloma - Holiday for dads
Aye well you can share it if you want to. There's also possibility (at least for the moms) to take their 3 months + the other 3, but be actually on holiday for 9 or 12 months. And then you get the same amount of money you'd get for 6 months, just over a longer time. Meaning less each month.CH wrote:Well yes, but as far as I have understood, those 3 months are actually parental leave that has been ear marked for the dad, right? I just took this as the dad in Finland only has possibility of 3 weeks and nothing more in any case

(My boyfriend says if you're in the army you can get maybe 3 days off if you have a kid

But it's nice anyway and all fathers should have rights to stay at home with their newborns without taking it out on the families income
