If you are looking for self defence, perhaps consider Taekwondo?

Less hand damage IMO.

I did taijutsu for awhile here. I just signed up and began in the same group as a lot of younger people. Didn't make it any less fun. And it was great for my Finnish. And apparently it was very exciting for the people there, because wow! A foreigner. And he speaks funny!

Had a great time.

for self defense..maybe krav maga or systema would be good for you.

if you want to fight someone on the floor or learn how to inflict serious pain on someone's joints go for brasillian jiujitsu

if you want to use your natural weapons i.e. your elbow and your knee and learn how to clinch, strike and kick..go for thai kickboxing.

i've been training at helsinki thaiboxing club for over 2 years now and i'm nothing but happy with the people and my coach. used to be the only english speaking person there, but lately, there have been a lot of foreigners coming in for the courses. Finnish is spoken but people will explain to you what the coach says and usually he'll try to explain it to you too in english.
