Allergy to Dairy and I'm going to Finland-help!

Post by MPballet » Wed Dec 03, 2003 3:27 am

Hello everyone,

If anyone could help me, I will be so happy! I am going to Finland this month
for Christmas and I have an allergy to all dairy things. I get by on reading
ingreadients. Dairy is hidden in most foods. Could anyone translate some
dairy words for me? I know the words for milk and butter, but there are
other words in English I will need translated: whey, casein, curd, lactose.
And if there are otherwords that mean there is dairy inside, could you please
let me know? THANKS!

p.s. anyone else have dairy allergy?

whey - hera
curd - rahka
lactose - laktoosi
lactose intollerance - laktoosi intoleranssi

i hope that helped..i busted out the finnish translator :) i don't have a dairy allergy but depending on where you go i.e. a supermarket in helsinki, if you ask someone who works at the supermarket they will be able to help you with your query in english

cheers

lactose intollerance is quite a big thing here. There are so many lactose free products around, just look for the word "laktoositon" - literally means without lactose. :D So you can even get lactose free milk if you fancy a milkshake!

Got these off the Valio page - so there is lactose -free stuff around. Now unless you are 100% allergic there is a brand of low-lactose products that says HYLA on it. Now if you are unable to do that then ask for especially 'no lactose'... magic word as you can see is "laktoositon" if you ask about in the restaurants they'll usually offer the magic word HYLA in there. Also in many restaurant menus there are hidden marks for lactose and glutein-free stuff, but its also you have to ask and make sure...

HI Caroline!
I live near Boston. In the next 2 years I may be moving to Finland as this is where my fiance is native of. I'd be happy to talk to you in PM.

Thanks everyone for help. just to confirm, I have a milk allergy which is different from lactose intollerance. But I will use these product because it's better than the lactose stuff (I suppose). This is all new to me. I was diagnosed with it 3 weeks ago...

i'm not sure if i have a lactose intolerance or a milk allergy or whatever--all i know is that when i stopped having (almost all) dairy products a couple of years ago my gastrointestinal health improved dramatically! i'm working to stop eating dairy completely but sometimes it's hard when i'm out & hungry & the nearest place is a donut shop or something.

i'm glad finland seems aware of the increasing frequency of dairy-related intolerances/allergies!

i learn so much useful stuff from this board... i'm saving this list of words for sure. thanks, folks, from another dairy-sensitive person. ;)

Btw, casein = kaseiini, kaseinaatit

If you have milk protein intolerance (causes gastrointestinal problems & rashes), you want to stay away from all the lactose free (HYLA) stuff as well. Since the allergies are increasing, there are constantly new products coming out, luckily. Are you allergic to soya? You can get soya milk or oatmilk.. there's a brand called Oatly http://www.oatly.com.

Let me know if you have any more questions.
HTH,
Mari

can i just go on record as saying "oatly" is the cutest name for non-dairy milk (whether soy, rice, oat, almond, etc.) ever??

Calling the white soy stuff 'milk' is about as misleading as calling Budweiser 'beer'.

heh, i actually prefer the taste of non-dairy milk, it's not as grossly heavy to me.

also, there are wide, wide variances in taste depending not only on what it's made out of, but the company! there's a lot of soy/rice milk here that i only have in cereal or in baked goods where taste isn't so important, but for drinking straight there are a couple of brands i must have ;)

I grew up in Wisconsin drinking bulktank milk, so all of these "altered" dairy products really frighten me. Perhaps the worst food experience of my life was accidentally buying Hyla maito...oh, and in one of my genetics texts I read that Finland has a 40% lactose intolerance rate and the highest rate of identical twins in the world.
That is not dead which can eternal lie, and with strange eons even death may die.

whoa, that's crazy about the lactose intolerance being so high in finns! because what i've read in several places is that northern & western europeans are some of the only groups ABLE to digest lactose... rates of lactose intolerance are quite high among people of color, even if they don't pay it any heed. ;)

anyway, so very surprising re: that stat.

i'm guessing the hyla stuff is like lactaid milk in the us, right? i've never had it, but that stuff makes me suspicious anyway because pills like lactaid (that apparently allow you to digest lactose when you take them) don't work for a lot of people.

Most of the Lactose-free cheese in the supermarkets where I live (Ontario, Canada) comes from Suomi... :P
