We have a Whirpool washer that's a front loader, it's pretty nice. It has alot of space inside the washing bin which is nice. It has a digi clock on the front so you don't have to guess the time when the cycle ends.

I don't like the 6th Sense dryer though, it leaves clothes moist and it's just a hassle. The olde dryer from the 90's works well that we have.

I hope that's a help.

Washing machines, sadly on my list of favourite conversation points

Rosenlew basic level toploader.

Why?

Saves space.
AAA rating
Someone said top loaders are stronger cos they have two bearings rather than one.
My last washer was an all singing, all dancing multi progamme, electronic pre-sets and LCDs displays - never used the features. Watching the countdown timer never got my washing out any sooner, pure gimmick IMO. It's ready when it's ready.
I never used the flashy programmes, discovered I only needed the following:

95°C basic wash
60°C basic wash
40°C basis wash

So now I just set the dial to "wash" and choose the temperature, so easy.

When we bought our last washer I wanted one that took bith hot and cold water supplies, but I couldn't find one. Had to settle for one that only took cold. Do any of the models you have looked at take a hot water supply?

The modern "biological" washing detergents apparently work better when they are dissolved in cold water, then heated up, rather than being plonked straight into hot.

Well I wash everything on 30 or 40 and it comes out fine (I have three teenage boys who play football, and do weird stuff like metal forging at the weekends..... that mean seriously dirty jeans and very smelly socks). I have never, ever washed anything on a programme more than 60 degs. The machine I have now is a front loader AEG 70330 which we bought in 2001 when we got here - never had a problem with it. I had the AEG drier stacked on top but had to replace that last spring and I got a Siemens instead (it was on special and is much better than the AEG). In France I had a Whirlpool top-loader which was ace (I also think top-loaders are better if you don't need to stack a drier on top, they are not so wide and the drums are generally bigger). In Hungary I had a Gorenje which was FAB (real solid stuff) but I'm not sure they are sold up here.

I think one of the most important things is after-sales service. We had a problem with our Siemens dishwasher and called their hotline. The woman on the phone managed to fix my dishwasher OVER THE PHONE!!!! Didn't cost me a penny. That was months ago and it hasn't broken down since 8) I stopped buying anything made by KEnwood because their after-sales service is dreadful. It takes anything up to 6 weeks to get spare parts.

I dunno how long LG has been in appliance business, so I'd check that. LG used to be called Goldstar and produced some cheapo products, so if they don't have a long history of producing quality washing machines I'd leave them out.

Bosch and Siemens are made in the same factory and are practically the same machines (except for their fridges/freezers which are made by Daewoo). Bosch is a very high quality brand and sometimes you pay more for the brand then the quality, however in my old kitched all the appliances were Bosch and there was never any problems and I was very happy about them. Now I have Siemens over and small appliances (the Porsche Design line) and haven't had any problems with them.

Candy is a long time contender in the appliance business, so I guess that be as good as choice as Whirlpool or any other.

Where did you get that story from?
Bosch and Siemens have indeed a lot of home appliances which are almost identical (besides the name and designation) as they produce the home appliances together via BSH (Bosch und Siemens Hausgeräte), but Daewoo is not involved in that at all.

And Raamv, take either a Bosh or a Siemens washing machine, they are usually good quality. We didn't have any problems with our Siemens washing machine so far and I know a bunch of people with Siemens washing machines and they work nicely.
Here in Finland, I have done everything I can to blend-in with the Finns, I've changed my hair color, wore differnet clothes, got different

My friend works as a marketing manager for Gigantti and he told me, but since you didn't believe me, here's some proof. That's why I bought a Daewoo fridge with an ice maker instead of Siemens and saved a 1000e. They are the same appliance, just the badge is different. So get your facts straight.

BSH has other bedfellows, including KitchenAid, for which it will start making induction cooktops in the summer. Keeping it in the family, KitchenAid turns out a built-in side-by-side refrigerator for Thermador. Bosch's relationships spread as far as Asia--South Korea's Daewoo Electronics makes a Bosch side-by-side refrigerator.

Depends entirely on your budget.

We have an Electrolux combo washer drier... only ever use the washer part. Cost just under €1k about 7 years ago. No probs to date.

Rosenlew is the Finnish budget brand owned by Electrolux. IIRC AEG is Electrolux's luxury brand.

If money is no object, look at Míele

Candy - my folks had one it lasted only a couple of years.

Now you're showing your English side. :D

Lot's of bugs love that temperature range and grow happily there. Anything like kitchen towels, etc, that have anything to do with food handling get a hot wash in my gaff (e.g. when you have handled raw chicken, rinse hands then dry on the towel, bacteria get transferred, these are not necessarily removed by washing). Just one food hygiene rule to follow which reduces occurance of ripuli .

Also bedding needs 60+ to kill dust mites.

As for bacteria and house dust mites....

Yes... I iron everything  That kills the buggers  (see previous thread several months ago about Brits vs. Finns ironing habits)

Yup, you really cannot say the manufacturing location or real manufacturer by brand only.

Helsingin energia has interesting listings here: http://www.helsinginenergia.fi/sahko/ko ... ppaat.html.

Bosch for example is made in Germany, Turkey, Spain and Korea (those side-by-sides actually : )

I give my vote to Miele. Personal experience says that they are long lasting and realible machines.
