Zippo Flint and Wick! .... and a Clothes Rack

Post by mridang » Sun Oct 21, 2007 10:02 pm

Hey Guys,

I bought a Zippo lighter in Finland. Now the wick has burnt out and the flint is worn out. Any idea where I could find a new wick and the flint? Its such a small trivial item that I possibly wouldn't knwo where to look. :-p

Also, i've been looking for a clothes rack. The kind that screws into the wall and has hooks for hanging clothes. I live in student housing and in those tiny little rooms, dumping clothes in one corner doesnt feel right. That why i thought a nice little clothes hook in one corner would help me clean this mess. I had a look at Ikea but they didnt have anything like this. Any big hardware/furniture accesories stores around Helsinki

The flint available for a Zippo lighter is sold in a Lighter/Tobacco/Cigar shop in Aleksanterinkatu (Same street as Stockmann but further towards the Cathedral but before Nordea bank)

your best and cheapest bet is http://www.ikea.fi but then you have to go there to get it as there are many options ..

Who says you're allowed to bolt anything to the wall? MrHOAS janitor comes and sends you a big bill for unauthorized alterations the room.

Hehe. Hank and RaamV - i check up with my KY building manager and I cant bolt anything on. Thanks for the heads up guys or I would have been royaly screwed. I'll just buy one of them movable clothes rack so that i can give it away when i have to move and no hassles with Mr. Janitor.

As for th tobacco shop: RaamV could you please show me the place on google maps.

All you have to do is go the http://maps.google.fi and check and tell me which cathedral you're talking about. I checked up online for the Nordea on Alexi and came up with Aleksanterinkatu 52. After looking for it on Google Maps, it shows me that the Nordea you're talking about is bang opposite Stockmann. Just tell me the name of the crossing and I'll manage. I'll seriously get lost without directions...and I wanna do this today after work. i feel so empty without my glossy Zippo. :( Small request raamv, please!

Hi, you can get the flints - kivi in finland in all R kioski plus most of the supemakets, as regards the wick it should not need replacing, I have used Zippo for 10 years without changing the wick.

I walked to Alexi 14 with a printout of Google Maps. Couldn't find the shop :-p

Might have closed down or something.

Does anyone know any other places in Helsinki where i could get it. It's such a petty little thing but has me all desperate.

Last time I checked it was in 44... Aleksi is one small street, not too damn hard to walk from one end to the other. Its in the corner of the pedestrian street right across... Aleksi 13 and Raffaello... the building where the cook shop is.

Usually in the corner there is some guy calling home with the talking drums and on the other side some crazy russian playing a tuba standing on an electric box.

Start walking from Stockmanns like a buddhist pilgrim and visit every door on your right.

Yeah Hank. You're right! It says Alexi 44. found their web page and it even has their phone number. I'll call 'em up and ask 'em if they have the flint and wick. It'll have me the trouble of going down there. :-D

You guys are lifesavers!

True, though playing a random pilgrim you experience the city ;)
There *used* to be a tobacconist on Castreninkatu, and a few others downtown, but I've not paid any attention to them...

Yeah. The winter i here and I barely risk stepping outdoors. As my Finnish friends say - 'Bro, this is just the beginning'. I experienced the city all i could during summers. Now, the only time I commute is from when i have to get to work/home....or....or.....the nearest pub :-D

Hats off to you Finns. You survive this winter - year after year. :)

Tobacco shop on Castreninkatu eh. I'll check up Havanna-Aitta and if it doesnt work out - then I'm on to other solutions.
