Hi all - 2 years ago I learned how to ice skate (the long distance type - långfärdsskridskor in Swedish not the ice princess sort!) and I am totally addicted. Now I will be in Vaasa and wondering if I can take it up again..?
There aren't many lakes near Vaasa from what I can see..anyone know if there are any lakes that are 'plowed' ie swept of snow for skating? Or even the seashore maybe if it freezes? There's usually a spot that is cleared for kids to skate on, at least there is in Sweden so I'm guessing the same goes for Finland. I'm not brave enough to go solo yet in case of falling in

!
Thanks for any input !

People usually drive cars and tractors on the ice. The city council makes an ice road out to Sundom. After the 1st or 2nd week of January there will be nothing to stop the heards of people on the ice outside of Vaasa, pushing prams, skiing, skating, driving. I wouldn't worry too much. I am sure that they skate futher out. I've even put on my princess skates and skated around islands outside of Vaasa when the weather is nice. Check out a picture of Vaasa and all the archipelago, that is what I am talking about.
As for the ice princesses that are scared of the sea, they skate on any of the rinks that appear next to schools or at any of the sporting grounds. We have 4 within 1 km of our place. Nothing fancy though.

Well, Vaasa is one of the few places you can get by in Swedish. Though the accent is... what the heck, you're from Ireland so if you can understand Cork you can understand Vasa, and if you can speak with a random culchie there is no reason to avoid Närpes
