Rabies in Espoo

Post by Rosamunda » Fri Nov 16, 2007 8:57 am

Can anyone give me a quick synopsis of the story so far? If I understand it correctly a dog has been diagnosed with rabies in Espoo....

Is there any kind of curfew imposed on dogs now....? Ours is outside quite a lot during the day but she has no chip (she is tattooed though) I'm worried she might be rounded up as a stray, she does wander off but never goes far.
Should I keep her in?

The puppy was put down last Friday.

If you are worried give your vet a call...

Probably a good idea not to let her roam free for fear of some over re-acting busybody..Long leash/tether in the garden for a few days until the the news is less prominant.

A minor typo made me do a double-take.
Rabies has been diagnosed in a puppy that was imported from Finland to India.

Hi Penelope,

I am sure that your dog would be vaccinated already, so if the shots are up-to-date, as far as I know, there shouldn't be a problem with rabies.

Despite the fact that my dog has a microchip, I never let my dog out alone, even in our garden, without a collar and a tag with its name, address and contact phone number. That being said, I use a very thin collar, the kind that snaps of and breaks easily if jerked with minimal pressure. I would advise the same for your dog as well. There have been known cases where the dogs have got themselves in trouble, e.g. the collar can get stuck somewhere.

If the dog is prone to eating off the ground, I use a nice comfortable muzzle as well to ensure she does not ingest anything harmful.

Cheers.

And I am thinking how on earth she was able to smuggle a puppy?

Yes, I know.... there have been a few.... this week like :

In the local supermarket, 114-year-olds Emmi Takkinen and Tuulia Ranta-aho say that Jokela is a place where nothing much happens.
!!!

I think they have been pretty busy at HS Intl these past few days and looks set to continue for a while

As for my dog, yes she is vaccinated. In theory she can't get out of the yard unless the kids leave the gate open. We'll make sure she doesn't stray into the field out the back.

Our puppy travels with us quite a bit (within EU and non-EU countries), and not once have we been asked for her EU passport or travel clearance paperwork.

I worry about all the puppies being smuggled in from Russia and Estonia, and advertised in Finnish newspapers…I doubt any are vaccinated prior to being sold.

We drove here from Budapest in 2001 with a couple of guinea-pigs in the car (took the ferry from Rostock to Hanko). We had the paperwork all in order but nobody ever asked us for it.

I remember crossing the English Channel hundreds of times and ALWAYS being asked if I was transporting any animals (but in those days it was of course completely illegal).

When I brought my two cats from the US ten years ago, I followed all of the
guidelines that I was given. We had the proper vaccines and health
certificates. When we arrived in Finland, I approached the border guard with
the cats and papers. He barely glanced at the papers and didn't even look at
the cats. I guess that guy still works there.

..does this explain the spate of wild dogs (now a fox has joined them) lying dead beside Länsiväylä?

Its looking like a Pet Cemetry at the mo'.
