Kela baby boxes?

Post by mycp2005 » Wed Dec 12, 2007 10:36 am

Hi all,

Unfortunately I am not eligible to get kela baby boxes as I am falling short of few days of being insured within kela system for 180 days.
So I got a letter stating I wont get the box. All these days I have been waiting thinking that I would get the box. When I submitted the application, the lady at Kela told me that I would be getting the box, but the maternity pay wont be available. I trusted her words and have been waiting all these days.
Today when I went to enquire, they are saying no its not possible.

Has anyone unused baby boxes for sale? If so, do please PM me.
or if there are some contents, which you have not used, do PM me.

You sound so upset.

Post by kiely » Wed Dec 12, 2007 11:10 am

Don't be upset it is only a box.
Now where are you in Finland Helsinki?
I have an old Kela box for you that will do for the baby to sleep in when he or she comes home.
As for the clothes...do you have any friends that have had babies??? They might have old clothes.
I have some and then you will get nothing but clothes when the baby is born.
The box only has clothes sheet top and bottom and a sleeping bag all of which I have and you are welcome to borrow. I will probably want them back for number two.

So don't fret just relax.
Most of the clothes in the kela box are only just fitting our little one so I would suggest buying avery little, until he/she arrives.

Hi kiely,

thanks for the assuring words. I know ofcourse we will be buying a lot of things for our baby. We would not stop buying becoz of that. It was a disappointment for me and it just had to blurt out.

Another reason why I am asking for the kela box is becoz the initial things which they give would give us an idea of what to buy. We first of all dont follow some items becoz it would be in finnish and we are first time parents-to-be and this cold weather is completely new to us. so we fear what to buy for the baby to keep it warm.

I am in Tampere, finland.

Also when you mentioned that we can buy the kela box, you meant with the entire contents in it or only the box?

From where can we buy it, can you post some more info on it please?

kela box

hi,im new on this forum,i just read that you did not get the box,you are not alone,i am due early january and also waited in vain for the box and did not get it,but don't worry, you could save up and buy the box as i did with my boyfriend, its still so much cheaper than buying everything separately. it cost us about 270€ or so but im not sad about spending that much coz it kind of solves the problem of wondering what to buy and all that you are not sure of,
besides the clothes in the box are a little too big for a new born so it will benefit you if you buy a few much smaller clothes. i have always visited kirpis/kirputori or flea markets and believe me you always find something worthwhile for the baby to come and even at a much reduced price, just expand your areas of shopping.for example we bought a baby bed from Fida in sörnainen at 10€ and have painted it and are much happy for our baby's new bed:)

I am sorry anny, I didnt quite understand what you said in your post.

You suggest that we buy individual items or do we buy the entire kela box?
One thing what is true that clothes would be too big generally also they say Indian babies are smaller than others. So that way, yes it is true.

I am planning of asking my midwife of the list of things and also their translations in finnish for easy shopping :)
Yes, the bed is what I am concerned about, what kind of to buy.

The Finnish Kela pages say that the box costs 274,15 euro + postage cost. You can order it via email from sirpa.kukkumaki@reima.fi or call +358-20-759 5806 or write a letter and order it from Reima Oy /äitiyspakkaus, Jämintie 14, FIN-38700 Kankaanpää, Finland

kela box

sorry you got me wrong when i said post i meant what you just posted on the forum.
we decided to buy the entire box, because what to buy is all thought out for you in a way.and much as the clothes may be big,im told that new babies do grow fast too and then they an always use the clothes and they are really good.
we bought the entire package because we thought it would still be cheaper than having to buy all the necessary items separately.
and you could always buy a few smaller clothes from H&m or lindex for example, when they have a sale or something like that ,if you are lucky you could fine nice pair being sold for less than 10€,just remember you don't have to have everything all at once.
i have a few clothes that friends have given,in addition to the kela box and i hope after the baby is born i can have time to go shopping and see what exact sizes to get for the baby.just be strong, you will come through the whole period.try to relax and be well without a lot of worry,at least for the sake of the baby to come :)

there are photos on the Kela page, you can pay a visit and see, what exactly is in the box this year:

the text is unfortunately in finnish only. the photos get bigger when you click on them.

enjoy this lovely period of life! *bit nostalgic*...

Does any of you have an idea when they will change the package next year?

^ Not sure but on the above Kela page they say the package will be available on week 21. So if it's the same next year that would make it end of May.

Hi everyone,

Thanks for all the responses. Last week I was very disappointed. Now I am back to normal and guess start to plan out things. Will keep in mind while buying stuff.

They say Indian babies are generally smaller than western countries, being a first time mom, I really dont know how the baby sizes are measured also.

Guess me and my husband have to start visitng all baby sections very often to understand them. And yes we can buy them later also. Just very needed ones need to be bought before hand

In cm. (length) I s'pose that local babies are around 45-50cm when they come (plop plop plot) out.

Make that closer to 50-55cm. 45cm is quite small for full-term baby ;)
