I can never remember. Are stores open at all on 24 Dec?

Sure. In the morning. If they wish to be. Prolly 8-13. Then you are sh*t out of luck after that.

But I wouldn't bank on small places (not chains) bothering to open up, unless they are selling something that people might need bigtime or if they are in the gifts business.

Out of curiosity... Why leave something to so last minute that you need a shop that is open on 24th?

I have all gifts purchased and packed. Have had for a long time.

I hate crowds so I try to arrange my shopping pain to be as light as possible.

Bully for you. I'm sure it's the way to go. On the other hand, I've once, many years ago, done practically ALL my Finnish Christmas shopping (gifts not food in that instance) on the 24th, and found it to be an immensely entertaining and even uplifting experience, as many of the staff were already into the glögi and everyone was in an extremely good mood, and it had a certain je ne sais quoi sense of communal survival about it.

It was a bit like the bonhomie that emerges (sometimes) in minor adversities like power-cuts on the Tube or if all flights are cancelled because of snow (though of course humans' capacity for making the best out of such things is sadly disappearing).

And crowds? What crowds? It would not surprise me in the LEAST if store sales next Saturday are 50% down on last Saturday - people will start moving in droves come Friday lunchtime.

On the day before the eve or in the morning of the eve I usually go and get some groceries... esp. milk. If I go and do the shopping on Friday, the best before dates will fall earlier than the ones they stock on Saturday and Sunday. On Monday, they'll hardly be filling up the shelves up and perhaps products have -50% tag on them

My reasons are none of the above. I'm a mystery shopper and I noticed that
the destination for our holiday has a few shops available. I can only perform
the shops if the stores are open on the 24th. I wanted to check the
possibility before requesting the assignment.

On the other hand, our destination is so boring that the only thing to do for
entertainment is shop and I would welcome a little retail therapy to break up
the naps and eating.

Because I won't be there before the 24th. :) If I were there now, I could do it now.

Rolph. I think the clue is in "mystery shopper".

Not QUITE sure what they do, but I think they are the pesky ones who go in and ask for things they know the store doesn't have, and then they mutter loudly to themselves and stamp their foot, and if the staff get shirty they (the bogus customer/mystery shopper) go off in a huff and write it up for the store and someone gets sacked. Probably some poor single-parent whose firstborn has just gone down with malaria and requires expensive round-the-clock medical treatment. You know the sort of scenario.

I don't know if they actually BUY anything, or if it all goes back on the shelves afterwards. But they are a bit like the Michelin Rouge inspectors only without the big belly.
