TAXI in Finland

Post by rauginta_kojine » Sun Dec 30, 2007 5:50 pm

Hi guys!

I am sorry if there was some similar topic earlier, but I have one question.

Approximately 2 months later, me and my boyfriend will be moving to another flat as our rent contract ends.
We do not have much stuff indeed but still if we dont take any taxi, it will be hard to move.
Actually, we have one mattress (80x200), simple computer table, two chairs, vacuum cleaner, winter clothes and all other clothes and common things.
Does here exist such a taxi, like a van taxi?
Also, the main question is about - how big is price difference between a simple taxi and a van taxi? Maybe there is no price difference at all? I am not talking about a big van, just a bit bigger car than a simple one.
Our table is not a problem, we can put it down in pieces and to get into the same package. But the biggest problem is the mattress and chairs.

I am waiting for suggestions and information about taxi.

P.S. Location is Helsinki.

P.S.S. Also would be very good if You could provide me the common prices of a simple taxi car. Also the phone numbers. THANKS!

Many gas stations also rent vans. Those that also have service, not just gasoline pumps.

I'm not sure you can do that with a taxi, they're not removing company per se and I guess they might just refuse once they see your stuff waiting to be put in the taxi. I think there's also some kind of insurance thing as well.

Anyway check http://www.pakuovelle.com/ my husband is telling me you can get a van for a few hours from there.

Yes. I have heard that there s a possiblity to rent a van. I have B category driver licence but I have never driven such kind of a car...So I would be a little scared :) . Unfortunately, my boyfriend doesn't have driver licence and never driven a van as well.
But I couldn't find here if there exists taxi vans... Maybe anyone knows of such a thing?

Don't be scared... I was in the same situation as you before I had to rent one when I moved out of my previous flat. Never driven in Finland, never driven a van before (only rather small cars), and last time I drove anything with 4 wheels it was 3 years ago. But it went well. Just take your time, regularly check right and left rear-view mirrors while driving to make sure you're not driving in-between two lanes and everything goes fine.

Btw, it was a Fiat Ducato, really easy to drive. But a friend of mine was there to deal with all the backward manoeuvres :D So if your boyfriend is not skilled enough - as I was -, you should either get another one (kidding) or hire a friend who can drive that sort of vehicle. In my opinion that's the best you could do and possibly the cheapest way. I'm not even sure a taxi of that kind exists, probavly have to go for rental anyways.

Thanks for such a nice reply. Well, I will see if I am ready to drive a van :D I have driven a car here in Helsinki once, it went quite well, but I am a bit scared of vans, because this is a different car and many things in driving changes... I dont know. One more problem - I am afraid I dont have any friends who could drive a van.

I'm afraid you won't find a taxi van. Taxi that are big enough to carry a few suitcases yeah but to move a few furnitures I doubt it.

Theres so many people here one of them would probably do it... if you didn't mention boyfriend I would have.

A van is IMHO easier to get around with, especially if you have someone giving the signs. Just figure out where you are going and where you are coming and when, as you cannot park just anywhere, so calculate a few parking tickets also.

When I was moving my stuff (mostly clothes and other items, no furniture), I called Helsinki taxi service and asked for a bigger car. It was VW Touran and that lady on the phone said that it is also possible to get a bigger one but one would need to wait a bit longer for it.

Do You know the prices of that bigger one? Is it the same price like for a normal taxi car, or bigger price? Thanks.

Just order the van! they are a no trouble to drive, if anything better as you get better view of whats around you? I never inderstand fear of driving a new vehicle i relish the opportunity. In essence they are all the same! same principles and rules apply!

Do it and get the experience under your belt then next time its even easier! and perhaps yo can help someone
