WILD salmon/rainbow trout

Post by Spectra » Fri Jan 04, 2008 4:48 pm

Does it exist here? Not outside Kehä III at least it seems. Nearly each time I ask at the supermarket fish counter, they're always farmed fish.

(elikkä lohi & kirjolohi)

It exists, buy a rod and a fishing permit. Or make some friends in nowheremäki :)

Tenojoki is the place for fishing. Drive to Karigasniemi, rent a cottage or live in a tent.
One place is: http://www.seitala.fi/e_index.html

Another fish is "harri"

Have been to Karigasniemi twice (hate fishing but husband loves it).

You won't get wild rainbow trout from anywhere since rainbow trout are not native to Europe and do not breed in many places in Europe, and were they do breed they will not be in sufficent numbers to harvest commercially. Wild salmon you can get though imagine that fresh wild salmon prices are through the roof right now. I suggest if you want wild fish you will need to get a mobile freezerand go fishing. North Norway has good stocks of brown trout, arctic char and salmon.

Hei Spectra,

Maybe good news.. While I was at the swimming pool last night, I got talking to some kindly Finnish ladies and they told me there is a stall in the Kauppatori in the city centre that sells wild Salmon, the guy is called Sappo Vihma, just look for his stall or ask where he is, apparently people will know as he is a bit of a character. I'll check it out this weekend as I'm really not keen on the fatty farmed salmon knocking about either..

...and I'm not keen on eating ANYTHING that has been fished out of the Baltic! I think once a month is the recommended limit. But avoid it completely if you're pregnant. Maybe you should ask Sappo where he caught the fish, if he has any.

There is a nice smokery on the Hanko Road (Route 51) between Kirkonummi and Inkoo. They have some really good fish, ( I found them unfriendly / rude but the fish was good). They smoke it with different herbs and spices. There is always something different to try. Sometimes they have smoked eel which is great for making dips and pâté (just add crème fraîche and horseradish).

If you are looking for gooooood fish, try Arctic Char.

Thanks for those tips.
Caroline--did you ever get to checking out the fish at the kauppahalli stall?

Penelope--I'll have to stop one day on our way to mökki. We've passed the place countless times but never thought of going in. Do you know their opening hours? And btw, isn't smoked fish bad during pregnancy too?? Do they have fresh fish?
And, what is Arctic Char in Finnish?

I found some wild salmon in the most unlikeliest of places last week--Lidl. They have a wild salmon & spinach pastry in the freezer section. It's quite nice!! And big bonus that the fish is wild!! Ocean Trader brand, called "Gusto di Mare." Hope what they advertise is true!

Only smoked fish and probably some roe etc. It is a smokery, not really a fishmonger as such.

I think you can eat smoked fish when pregnant, but not too often. Once a month is probably OK. But then again, I wouldn't touch any Baltic fish at all.

PS: Where's your mökki? *Cos there is an excellent fish stall in Tammisaari market on a Saturday morning, but not sure if he is there all year round.

Neil--Neat website, but looks like I'd have to live in Great Britain to get that great fish, ey? Too bad... Have you had it before?

And raamv, a while back you said you saw some frozen 'wild' salmon in Lidl. I guess I didn't read that post of yours back then. Should look better in the frozen food section I guess....usually I pass it quite quickly. Was it boxed or in a bag? Did you try it?

I didnt try it. It was frozen sealed in plastic.
We usually go to 4seasons fish that Penny mentioned. If you are good enough, they even sell you raw ones if they have it. One of the most friendliest and accommodating people that you can meet...and you can even ask them to see if they can catch you wild fish of your variety (The dads the fisherman)..The thing about them in the shop between Kirkkonummi n Siuntio on highway 51 is that its fuly family owned..and they supply to the only 5 star restaurant in Helsinki..the Kamp!!
