Dear God! I've just realised been neglecting my cat (in this respect)...

Can't imagine paying for cat groomage though. Why, sincerely, is it worth paying someone to groom a cat?

I've owned cats for almost 20 years and if I think this one needs a groomer, she needs a groomer.

Fair enough - I weren't knocking you. I've had a cat for a mere tenth of the time that you've had cats and know little about such things - hence my earlier question. Seriously, what are the benefits and how expensive is it?

I don't think she's grooming herself. I was brushing her last night and I filled the brush several times. But it wasn't so much the hair in the brush as it was the hair that just kept flying everywhere with each stroke. It's as if every stroke of the brush caused hundreds of hairs to fly into the air. She needs a bath and a good scrub, but I'm not equipped to do that. She needs a professional.

About cat grooming, we had a cat that had long hair and if she wasn't brushed regularly or sent to the groomers then her hair would get matted. The matting can get painful and restrict movement if it gets really bad.

I can't recommend one (no cat) but I have always found that whenever I have a doggy question I get advice from the Pet Shop (in our case the one in Niittykumpu where I get the Eukanuba). They "know".
Or maybe look for ads in the freebies like Länsiväylä. I'll keep my eyes open.

How often do you brush her?

My wife's cat of 18 years, (and by default mine for the last 7), needs brushing every day. It's not a ragdoll or anything special, just a bog-standard tortoiseshell & white... but still gives off a handful of fur per day. If you leave it more than a day, she sheds fur which ends up on the floor and grooms herself more resulting in throwing up furballs.

The brush is pretty important, we have used all kinds, the best for relatively short haired cats seems to be the slicker type

We just brush her until the brush stops picking up fur. It takes about 5 minutes per day and the cat seems to love it. Perhaps you could brush her more often... I'm pretty sure she'll prefer that than being scrubbed.

Maybe a better brush would help. I've never had a cat that required this much brushing. We only got her in June and it took a while for her to get used to us. Petting was rare and brushing was out of the question. Only recently has she really started joining us as a member of the family. Each time I brush her, it seems to just release thousands of hairs that look old and dry and they immediately cover her body. I'll visit the pet store tomorrow and ask for advice on a brush or something else that will help her.

Sounds like it could be stress-related, i.e. just not yet comfortable with being groomed/mauled. Our cat looks after herself and little grooming required ever (but I have an Old English Sheepdog, so small mercy if any...), however, take her on a journey in a box/bag, and she'll a) piss everywhere early doors; b) crap in the bag/box; c) shed hairs like there's no tomorrow (she seems to believe that's the impending case). Brush, diet, etc can affect, but I'd guess it's something else like with young Siiri on her travels.

Incidently, I also found this.

"5. Use two-sided tape to attach plastic self-grooming combs along the lower corner of wall. These products permit your pet to rub against the plastic bristles and get a grooming any time she desires." Madness...but you'd be able to see how much fur comes off without human intervention.

I would say 'good luck with the grooming', but perhaps not the thing to say on t'internet...
