The good the bad and ugly of Kirkkonummi?
The good the bad and ugly of Kirkkonummi?
I have heard mostly good about Kirkkonummi and actually am planning on moving there now that I found a few nice places for sale. We've even made an offer for one place so we'll see if we are gonna be moving soon
There's ok prices, still fairly close to Helsinki and the commuter trains are going quite often. Both my wife and I have cars though so driving into Helsinki isn't an issue. Anyways, I was wondering what other people have to say about Kirkkonummi... living there, things to do, the people, services, etc. Any comments would be great. Thanks! I'm coming from Tampere so I don't really have any experience living there in the PK area.

Re: The good the bad and ugly of Kirkkonummi?
Helsinki commuter trains go there, so close enough for me

Re: The good the bad and ugly of Kirkkonummi?
You might consider the possibility, that they are planning on tolls for commuters to Helsinki in the future...
Get in there...

Actually I did. I'll be working in Espoo so I don't think it'll be a problem.

well it could be, since they are planning the tolls on all the ring roads...jas_rho wrote:mCowboy wrote:You might consider the possibility, that they are planning on tolls for commuters to Helsinki in the future...

Are you planning to move to Kirkkonummi itself, or somewhere in the surrounding areas? It's a nice enough place, personally I never had any problems there. Although somebody did once steal my towel in the swimming pool

Re: The good the bad and ugly of Kirkkonummi?
A Kirkkonummi to Espoo commute is really easy. The worst traffic is in Espoo inself. And as already mentioned there are public transport options. (Did anyone one see the article in HS where they used Nokia profits to extend the metro as far as Hanko?
) Anyway, nice place, green and pleasant. Not sure if you have kids... but if you do it might be an idea to check the schools situation. AFAIK there are no English language schools in Kirkkonummi (but there is English Language Day-Care).
My husband's folks lived in Kauhala (Oitmäki) for many years, beautiful area and land prices were (are?) better value than Espoo. You now have decent stores in Kauklahti and Kirkkonummi centre (10 yrs ago the nearest supermarket was Seilori/Lippulaiva in Espoonlahti).

Re: The good the bad and ugly of Kirkkonummi?
Kirkkonummi is pretty huge so it depends on where you saw the house and made the offer, in Kirkkonummi. Norther side ( Veikkola) is good to commute using Turunvayl(1).
Southern side is OK to commute using the Länsivayl(51).
Places like Kylmäal, kalajärvi,Sepankyla, Lapinkyla, Oitmaki, etc are pretty isolated and needs 2 cars.
Ont he southern side: Places like Heikkila,Jolkby, Laajakallio,Överby, Ravals, Tolsa, Masala, Jorvas, (Some parts of Luoma) are pretty accessible by Train and bus. The schools are in Masala and in the downtown area and one in kuusala. More southern places are porkkala, Upiniemi ( some parts are not accesible) Kantvik which have pretty good area too and are closer to the sea.
Kauklanthi is not in Kirkkonummi, its in Espoo.
On the Northern side: veikkola, kylmäla, palojärvi, are close to Turunväyla and have the school in veikkola.
so,School depends on where you are located.
Shopping: There is a big mall with a Prisma, Hesburger, apteeki, hair cut salon, etc close to downtown and 51.
They are also building a Big K-citymarket close to downtown. There is a LIDL, K-RAUTIA and varuboden S-Rauttakauppa close to the railway station.
THere is already a KKK citymarket there. Downtown has all the banks n a library, bus stop and train station.
Now its in Helsinki seutu, its easier to use the Helsinki card to travel too. Veikkola also has a big KK market.
With kids, find a place close to a daycare and also a school.
Avoid Luoma, Längvik, etc as they are very expensive areas.
There is a movie theatre in downtown but not that popular.
which part are you folx looking at ?

Re: The good the bad and ugly of Kirkkonummi?
..you need to bring your own fun
its really a case of taking all that space you just bought and making the most of it - you now have a work-shop, a boat park, a terrace, a BBQ. Of course, the problem is that lots of 'stuff' never made anyone happy and its near on impossible to get people from civilisation out to visit (its like living in South London and saying to your mates up North, come on over the river and visit - no chance).
That said, its great for kids - which is reason number one to 20 why you'ld move here. There's lakes on your doorstep, great skiing, great walking in Porkala Peninsula, plenty of berries in summer and mushies in autumn ,the pool is world-class (imho) Helsinki is 26minutes to downtown and all your shopping is on Lansivayla - I can get to work faster here than I did in London when work was 2.6miles away.
It depends what smokes your tires really
Hanks right, when you say to someone in the civilised world that you live in Kirkkonummi, beyond the 'Great Ring'...their eyes glaze over

Re: The good the bad and ugly of Kirkkonummi?
as for getting people in your placce, We live in Inkoo and you can imagine how difficult it is to get people here..
The thing is..It can be done albeit not that often..In our case it could be a 2,3 or 4 times a year which os OK for now.
Mebbe in Kirkkonummi it might be more like 6-12 times a year which is in the borderline of having someone over every month..
in Inkoo, the other way is more difficult as in going somewhere...
Without planning its very difficult to make any kinda visits..as individual or as a family.
Kirkkonummi will make it easier for that as it is close to ESP and HEL..( though same problem with Easter HEL and Vantaa )
Anyways, We are also in the prowl for a good offer but not in a hurry..When that time and the right price comes..we will see..
Meanwhile, I would advise that If you are not comfortable with town or village life, avoid places like Läpinkyla etc ... and stick to places close to TurunVäyla or 51-Länsiväyla..

Re: The good the bad and ugly of Kirkkonummi?
Thanks for all the comments! Turns out we are gonna be moving there afterall. Our offer was accepted for a place there and one hour later someone offered us the price we wanted for our place we have now. So it worked out so smoothly. I don't really care about people visiting, that's their problem if they don't want to come. Most of my friends live in Tampere right now away so if we get visitors, they'll be coming all the way from there.
We don't have kids yet, none planned either, but from what you guys say and the things I have heard I am sure its a good peacefully area. Anyway sounds like grocery/hardware store wise its pretty ok, and for now thats whats important. My wife can worry about how she's getting to Stockman on her own

..you've never seen an empty K-Rauta on Saturday like the brand new K-Rauta Kirkkonummi...its barren. If it was NZ they'd be playing indoor cricket on aisle four to pass the day..and if you ask, the'yd probably build your terrace for you just to get out of the shop..Anyway sounds like grocery/hardware store wise its pretty ok,
Re: The good the bad and ugly of Kirkkonummi?
hank can i get a copy of that map,fantastic...
Re: The good the bad and ugly of Kirkkonummi?
It's in such a good location...... we have used their car park TWICE for my youngest to throw up in/on. We usually rush off to the mökki straight after early breakfast on a Saturday morning. For some reason he can barely make it out of Espoo before "Mum..... I feel sick...." So now, every time we drive past, I ask him if he would like me to stop....cow-heada wrote:..you've never seen an empty K-Rauta on Saturday like the WORD CENSOR - SPAM POST/MESSAGE!!!
