Why yes, its a vibrant city teeming with people, noteworthy is the malay quarter where the annual ostrich races are held. The district south of the Grainhider Street is teeming with nightlife. The fifeen golf courses shaded by palm trees and hibiscus.... erm... good weed this.... need to get more... be right back.
Cheers, Hank W.

You might want to take a look at this thread. It’s not going to answer your questions, but still... :)

Hi,

Jyväskylä is a nice place, but it is also a rather small place (very much a university/student town though, that makes it lively... at least for students!) So it depends on what you're expecting. I seem to remember there is a gold course, or maybe even two (?) in the vicinity, not sure about this though... bars... yes (see the magic words "student town" above)... have you ever been there actually?

You may gather that I've lived there myself, not for some time though. So I'm very much biased by a truckload of personal memories. Kind of miss the place :?

Not sure about the pub where expats might meet - my guess would be Old Brick's Inn... (if you meant what such a place would be in Jive-as-Kylie)

So, where exactly will you be living in there? I mean, which part of Jyväskylä... centre... Kuokkala...?

These is a small ex-pat community here, although many foreigners here just keep themselves to themselves. Some of them read this forum, so I guess you should get another view soon.

There are a couple of golf courses in the area.

Some good restaurants, my favourite is a place called "Figaro".

Can you tell us a bit more about "you"? What are you looking for? Other young ravers to razz noisily with every weekend? Older solitary and quiet people with whom you can drink your friday bottle? People with young kids with whom you can talk excitedly about the latest pram or nappy filling? Young professional jetsets to compete in the rolex olympics with? It all sort of depends what you're looking for....

We ( my pregnant Finnish wife, me, a french man and our 1 year old daughter) will be moving in a house in a small village ( Lievestuore), 15-20 minutes from Jyväskylä. We lived for 7 years in helsinki. My wife is a Fashion designer and i am running a photo agency (http://www.Galbe.Com). She has some friends already in the area but i do not know anybody. I like to golf ( HCP 17) although i have had no time for the last 3 years, but i am planning to start again since i hopefully will have more free time. I have been also practicing some martial arts (judo-ju jutsu and kickBoxing) but more as a hobby than competition...
i have no real expectations, a beer from time to time in the evenings will be fine, a golf partner also, a family with young children to have BBQ at our place etc... I know that in Helsinki, there are different places where foreigners meet every week and i was wondering if such a network exists in Jyväskylä... if not hopefully as you said people will contact me and if not i will just have to go explore on my own... i will be happy to know of the good place eat.. Figaro is on my list now...

I have relatives in the Lievestuore area. You're not by any chance buying one of the new build rivitalot there? I understand there are some nice people living there, however please bear in mind that a cousin of mine was put in hospital by a gang with iron bars in 2006 (outside a bar in Lievestuore), however this is more gang related tit-for-tat activity so shouldn't affect you, but it's only fair to inform you - I hope you don't mind. If you have friends around there, ask them why Kivihovi closed.

I think I'll work on my handicap before offering a 2-ball? :D

Oh, and Lievestuore is a fair taxi ride from Jyväs, so budget for that also.

If you need any extra help when moving, please feel free to drop me a line, I know people in the area who could offer local knowledge if needed.

Good Luck!

Great! well, i am not planning to go into any gang related activities for a while, at least :D
Golf is a great game where players of different level can play together, unlike tennis, so please let's meet sometime this spring for a round, my Hcp WAS 17, it is now probably closer to 40 unfortunately... we are moving in a older house on Majasaarentie, but the village is small ...

Perhaps a beer or two is in order in Jyväs centre. I missed the last get together (had flu :( ), but perhaps another one if people are up for it.

Is your wife from the locaility?

Jyvaskyla is my favourite city in Finland. One of my best friends lives in Lievestoure and it is really really in the sticks. Be prepared for a real Finnish town, it may not be for city folk, but I love it. Your just a stone throw away from my cottage/retirment home (almost finished!) and I welcome you over any time.
