Internet radio players
Internet radio players
Anyone bought a stand-alone internet radio player in Finland recently? I'm tempted to buy one to play at work, I'm getting pretty sick of Finnish radio stations that play the same 6 songs all day every day...

Re: Internet radio players
I bought a Revo Pico wifi in the uk back in September to bring with us when we moved, it cost about £130. Its used everyday and is brilliant!
I don't mind Finnish radio but they do seem to have a playlist of 10 songs and only change them once a month.
The only problem I have found with the wifi radio is that all the BBC stations don't play properly and just buffer constantly, I still can't figure out why. It may be the crappy router from Sonera as I can listen to them on my pc clearly which makes me think that its not the fact we live in the middle of the forest and can only get 1mb broadband!

Re: Internet radio players
There have been debate about that in sfnet.viestinta.radio from time to time, with one of the participants having worked for a nationwide commercial radio network. His (rather stubborn) view has been that these kind of complaints don’t hold true because the playlists are computer-generated and the computer system keeps track of the tunes so that the same song won’t be played again during the same day (for example.) While all this could very well technically speaking be true, the perception of the listeners seems to be a bit different...jamesyboy wrote:I don't mind Finnish radio but they do seem to have a playlist of 10 songs and only change them once a month.

They sell one at Clas Ohlson I've just noticed, can't remember the brand - but it's sold under the BT brand in the UK and has some pretty good reviews. I think it was 159 €, so I might splash out on it after pay-day. Providing I can use it at work and figure out how to network it up without having to involve the IT department who probably wont like it!

I can certainly vouch that the Helsinki commercial pop music radio stations play the same 6-10 songs per day, I was going to make a list last week, but then I decided to get on with some work instead. I think it's pretty normal here though, I was tearing my hair out and slowly going mad, but none of my Finnish colleagues seemed to mind or notice at all!

Re: Internet radio players
Its not just the pop music stations thought that play the same songs over and over, Radio Nova's music department must sit down once a month and decide what "classic song" they are going to play to death for the following month. Unfortunately the only songs on the list they choose from are Tina Turner Simply the best and Sting Englishman in New york!

Try http://www.radiohelsinki.fi/, they don't have playlists

Most of the new Nokia phones can play internet radio (via RTSP streaming links). I listen to Radio 1 quite a lot on my 6110 Navigator.

Just going back to slagging off Finnish radio playlists, I'm starting to come to the conclusion there's very little (if any) human influence in them whatsoever.
I've only been living in Finland since November 07, and I've heard (completely out of context) Stevie Wonder - Happy Birthday (on Groove FM I *think*) more times than I ever did in the whole of the 1980s. Always makes me chuckle
I'm sure it's all computer selected, the "DJ" probably chooses a genre or decade, and that's it. I've often heard bizarre line-ups that are obviously based on the current album chart, jumping from some silly Suomi POP song, then onto something from Val Halen's Greatest Hits.
