Healthfood help

Post by Shazzer » Fri Mar 14, 2008 4:41 pm

Hi All!
Could someone please tell me what the following items are in Finnish and where I can find them the next time I'm in Finland (Helsinki/Espoo)? Thanks so much.

1. Wheat germ
2. Flaxseed meal
3. Sunflower seeds (preferably raw or unsalted/unsweetened)
4. Blackstrap molasses
5. Vitamin A in fish liver oil form (capsule form is fine)
6. Vitamin C in crystalline powder form

Just in case anyone is wondering, the above has been recommended as a cure for persistent coughs - the kind that is so severe it brings tears to your eyes and a tickle in your throat that just won't go away.

Shazzer.... you've spent some time away from FF...nice to see you back.
For the vitamins, I'd go to the pharmacy.

I saw sunflower seeds at CM Ruoholahti. I also bought Fish Oil capsules there.

The big thing now is SuperGreen/Mega Green powder, which is Barley Grass (Ohran oras) which is available at health food stores. Gonna buy some.

Most health foods are a TON cheaper over the internet. Especially vitamins.

the problem is that those need to ordered inside Finland, since usually the Customs confiscate all nutrients etc if they come from outside Finland.

I don't think there is any problem ordering inside the EU.

Hi Everyone and thank you for your kind replies!

If anyone is interested, here's the website that I came across with a remedy for persistent coughing.

McCowboy, what's Barley Grass for? BTW, does anyone here take Spirulina? I have two big bottles at home and I haven't really read up on the benefits of it. Thanks!

well there is...

if the nutrients ordered inside EU are more potent than what's allowed in Finland, the customs will seize it and destroy it.

Fair enough, but if I am simply looking for the usual stuff that I can find in any healthfood store in Finland then they are not going to confiscate it are they  I buy Efalex for my son, half price from the UK (including P&P). And I'm not talking about medicines - just bog-standard vitmains and minerals. So the "strength" depends on how many mg you swallow in one go. (AND, I don't think Tulli opens every parcel coming in from the UK, but that's not the point.)

These two should be found in almost any bigger store. Look for where they have "health food" or their dried beans.

But note that flaxseed contains phytoestrogens, which I think some see as a health benefit (and some as a health risk). But at least for me flaxseed made... um... my girlies hurt like I had PMS, which normally doesn't happen for me at all, so I had to stop using it.

I have found that it's generally difficult to find vitamin A (only) products in Finland, at least any with decent potency. I have asked at Yliopiston apteekki, but they have all other vitamins available, no A on its own. I suppose it is because vitamin A is claimed to have bad side effects if taken in large doses (osteoporosis etc)... In the UK I have bought vitamin A capsules from Holland & Barrett, and they contain approximately 300% of your recommended daily intake. Anyone seen anything similar in Finland?

Some of the vitamins are cheaper in Tallin ( not all)..
Though, Shazzer, if you are in the Eastern part of the globe, you should be able to buy it from Hongkong or Singapore/Malaysia!!

Iseult - the reason you can't buy vitamin a in such strong potency (300% of regular dose) is because it is proven to be toxic in high doses. Chronic toxicity of vitamin is characterised by the following symptoms: severe liver enlargement and damage, anemia, fetal abnormalities (pregnant women must be very careful), menstrual irregularities, extreme fatigue, liver damage, injury to brain and nervous system. Vitamin a is a fat soluble vitamin and is stored in the body, ie the excess is not excreted, it continues to build up. Personally and professionally, i feel that it is irresponsible for a company to supply a product at 300% of the recommended daily dosage. You should get professional advice with nutritional supplements, because you also need to calculate how much vitamin a you are getting your food too.

Maximum recommended dosage for vitamin a is 10,000IU. 300% of that is 3,000,000IU. Toxicity levels commence at 50,000IU. BE CAREFUL!!
