Eräpäivä
Eräpäivä
Dear Forum,
have I understood it correctly that in Finland, the eräpäivä on a bill doesn't mean the latest possible date of payment, but rather more specifically the exact date that you should transfer a given money? So, they don't want the money neither before nor after that date?

Re: Eräpäivä
Well, definitely not later. Its the date the payment should be in the recievers account IIRC...

No, it is the latest acceptable date to pay. You can pay the same day you got the bill or any day between that and eräpäivä.

Re: Eräpäivä
Well, it does say in one "small print" on a giro I'm looking something like "the payment should be done on the "eräpäivä" to avoid late fees, if you are using another bank, please pay 3 bank days before to make sure the payment is credited on the date." But I guess that was more in the days back when the money had to circumnavigate the globe for a week when it was transferred between banks.

Re: Eräpäivä
Ok, thanks! I was confused because there's an eräpäivä-field also in my electronic payment form when I pay via internet, and I've been thinking all the while that the eräpäivä on the bill needs to correspond to that in my electronic form, i.e. pay on the eräpäivä and not before/after (and in addition my boyfriend claimed that in Finland you always pay on that eräpäivä and not before/after).
I have now paid my creditcard bill before the eräpäivä, will see if they "complain".

Re: Eräpäivä
I always put the eräpäivä on the payment and I've never heard anyone complain, not even if this eräpäivä was on a Friday and to a different bank (meaning that the actual payment might've been on the payee's account only the Monday, Tuesday or even Wednesday after the weekend.

no they won't. in addition to my automated monthly credit card payment (which is on a date that suites me, I don't even remember what my paper bill says for the erapa"iva") I dump random amounts into the credit card account whenever I'm pleased. noone ever complained.blaugrau wrote:I have now paid my creditcard bill before the eräpäivä, will see if they "complain".

You probably know this but.... just for those who don't...
When you pay a bill on-line you can enter the payment date you wish (but yes, preferably before or on the due date). So, in other words, if you have a pile of bills to pay you can sit down and "pay" them all on-line but enter different due dates for each one. This is useful since it means you can log on and pay your bills once a week, even if they are not due until the following week (and thereby avoid forgetting them, or losing them in the mean time). I rarely pay bills "early" that way, but it also means I don't forget many and end up paying late.
If you key in a date that is eg: a Sunday or a bank holiday, the screen will automatically modify this to the next banking day. So you can see the actual payment date.
