lenkki makkara

Post by karen » Fri Mar 21, 2008 4:54 pm

My men did the shopping yesterday and brought home a package of lenkki makkara. Dh informed me that ds wanted it. He said that he thinks it should be cooked in the oven. I have no idea what to do with it. At what temp and for how long? Any other prep needed before or after cooking?

In the oven... traditional uunimakkara would take, erm, about 20-30 min in 200 degrees C... you can e.g. make a deepish cut (length-wise) and insert some cheese wedges before shoving the thing into oven... Hard cheese like Emmental is good, but other varieties may also do. Also you may squeeze some tomato purée into the cut before inserting the cheese wedges... even if you do not use cheese etc, it's a good idea to make some diagonal cuts onto the sausage before putting it into the oven, like what you see below...

Lenkkimakkara can also be wrapped in (strong) aluminium folio... maybe with some onion rings etc... and prepared on the saunakiuas :D

After the cooking, mustard and/or ketchup... voilá!

edit: the tradition also includes :beer_yum: :D

The day you forget the sausage, then it's going to be the time to really start worrying :D

And for anyone who buys the cheap sausage:

Look for the word beginning "kone..." in the ingredient declaration if you want to know if mechanically recovered meat is in your sausage :))

Hey, she's talking about lenkkimakkara, not grillimakkara (as in the picture).

HK blue? Make a slice by knife almost splitting the whole sausage, take plastic cover off, put thick slices of cheese inside the sausage, and heat it in owen about 20 minutes in 225c.

You might heat some potato (French fries or similar), or some onions at the same time.

That kind of food is basic bachelor's food - it's not like turkey or such, that you'll need a manual how to repair it. One can eat it straight up from a fridge.

Hmmm - going to grill some sausage now... :)

You are quite correct in that; however I only chose the first random pic to show how those fiendishly difficult cuts are "traditionally" made... so as karen would not try to carve some complicated characters in the lines of "MENE, MENE, TEKEL, UPHARSIN" on the sausages

Well, that was an experience. I cut and baked as directed. Here are things I found out:

1. The kid doesn't actually like lenkki makkara.
2. A glass baking dish will break if the only item in it is a lenkki makkara.

And when you get really adventurous, try Finnish stroganoff:
