Fishing in Tampere Area
Fishing in Tampere Area
I am moving to Finland in June/July this year with my wife (who is Finnish). My favourite pastimes are motorcycling and freshwater fishing. Despite some extensive surfing of the net (excuse the pun) I cannot find any mention of, what I would call, normal fishing i.e. Carp, Bream, Perch, Roach etc... Can anyone give me any information if this type of fishing in the Tampere area.

If you read Finnish you can find a good deal, if not however, it can be tough. Did you try the site http://www.fishinginfinland.com/?
**** that and **** you
Re: Fishing in Tampere Area
Yes, but it concentrates on predators and trout/salmon. I don't speak the language apart from some basic words (bread, butter, milk etc..) so I won't starve!! but I would like to still fish. My father in law has taken me ice fishing in the past which was fun but lately the ice has not been thick enough to do it safely. We don't see much evidence of global warming in England but it seems more apparent in Finland.

Re: Fishing in Tampere Area
Most of the lakes that I have been on have perch. I haven't seen any roach or carp. Then again I mainly fish for pike and perch. This spring should be interesting in the south for fishing. Without a lot of ice the winter kill should be limited. I think the easiest thing to do would be to call local tackle/bait shops and ask them.

You can buy a good dingy for about 600€ and tie it up on the shore. Then whenever you feel like it, you can row out and fish to your hearts desire. Just don't pee standing up.Earman wrote:I am moving to Finland in June/July this year with my wife (who is Finnish). My favourite pastimes are motorcycling and freshwater fishing. I haven't seen much shoreside fishing, except for sometimes on the rapids between the north and south lakes.
Re: Fishing in Tampere Area
You need of course a licence (county) and a permission of the water (fishing right) owner (often a local fishing club).
Therefore you need local information. Best to go to a fishing shop in Tampere and ask. They will know.
Licence/permissions can be bought by some local shops (quite cheap) so you don't need much planning.

Further research has shown that there are a few "holiday" camps with carp fishing attached but I do appreciate the idea of contacting the local tackle shops. I am sure there must be somw although I have nbever come across any whilst in Tampere other than a small section in a Department store or Sports shop.

I have seen one on Hatanpään Valtatie, near the junction with Tampereen Valtatie.Earman wrote:... local tackle shops. I am sure there must be somw although I have nbever come across any whilst in Tampere other than a small section in a Department store or Sports shop.

Under the Everyman Rights of access, you can fish anywhere with a simple hook and line (including ice fishing) without any licence. There are a few exceptions where the water area (usually rapids) is reserved for specific trout/salmon fishing, however this is more the exception than the rule.
Political correctness is the belief that it's possible to pick up a turd by the clean end.

True. But I suppose that this is not what the OP meant by fishing.Karhunkoski wrote:Not necessarily.rinso wrote:You need of course a licence (county) and a permission of the water (fishing right) owner (often a local fishing club).

Re: Fishing in Tampere Area
Well my friend you are in for a huge surprise and a massive dissapointment.
My love is angling, mainly sea but also streams and lakes.
1st The Dissapointments. You will find fishing from October through to May impossible unless you like sitting around a hole in the ICE. Finns and Russians love it, but catching tiddlers is no fun whilst freezing your nuts off. Now you can also use NETS and SPEARS in Finland, but that is hardly fishing, but more a local custom for food gathering.
Spring brings an amazing change and then the rivers and lakes are alive again. Fishing in beautiful surroundings, magic scenery but what will you catch.
NO CARP, no real Organised fishing lakes, but plenty of opportunity to catch Pike (small by European Standards), Perch (Finns love to eat both), Roach, Dace and Bream. Fly fishing for everything or fishing for Salmon or trout with lures is popular. Sea fishing is useless with Pike again popular
No Cod or normal sea fish around the nearly freshwater coastal waters.
When you arrive you will find the shops sell on the Fresh Fish counter Pike and Perch with of course Salmon as the staple fresh fish.
Fishing is really different (which is fun to learn) and when those lovely fresh days arrive and you sit beside the local river or lake you will get bitten to death by Mosquitoes, so you have to wear special anti mozzy clothing and hoods. You will need a small rowing boat or find someone who has one, to enjoy the lakes.
I bought a book of Finnish Nature and spent 3 years identifying the Finnish Species of fish and things, which was great fun, and as many anglers know, the nature that surrounds us, is just as important as catching a big fish. Tackle is another strange area, because buying bait is very difficult. They seem to use maggots in Winter but not in summer. I raided my compost heap and just used worms, finding bread etc useless.

Well, the Baltic is almost a "lake", the salinity being so low it allows the sea to freeze.SaxonManFinland wrote: Sea fishing is useless with Pike again popularNo Cod or normal sea fish around the nearly freshwater coastal waters.

Re: Fishing in Tampere Area
As I found out. Being dumb I just imagined the Northern waters to be deep and cold and full of Cod and Pollock. Turns out I was the only Pollock around who thought Sea Fishing would be brilliant.Hank W. wrote:Well, the Baltic is almost a "lake", the salinity being so low it allows the sea to freeze.SaxonManFinland wrote: Sea fishing is useless with Pike again popularNo Cod or normal sea fish around the nearly freshwater coastal waters.
Still, evening sunsets near the house, fishing the Vuoksi are memories never to be forgotten. This image is the local life savers practising near the rapids. Not a brill picture because it is so wonderful, but so big you need 5 or 6 shots just to see it all from 1 place. When rapids are not running men will be waist deep here fly fishing, next to people swimming

Yes, you need to go to the "northern waters" for all that...SaxonManFinland wrote: I just imagined the Northern waters to be deep and cold and full of Cod and Pollock.
