Wood oil on terraces

Post by Keke » Sun Apr 13, 2008 11:03 am

I've usually used 'cheap' wood oil on our terrace (e.g. the FXA stuff from K-Rauta or similar).

I've noticed that it needs to be re-applied once or twice a year, as it wears off in winter. Has anybody had any experience using more expensive wood oil e.g. Tikkurila Valtti or the like? I was wondering if it's worth trying something more expensive, or should I continue using the cheper stuff?

There's a huge price difference bewteen the brands like Tikkurila and the cheap stuff, so Tikkurila would have to make a lot of difference to make it worthwhile.

Anybody got any experience? Thanks!

We did ours once last year (in the late autumn) and now I noticed it needs to be done again SOON. Could be something to do with the "warm" wet winter we had. Anyway, I'll have to ask the other half what he used. But I wouldn't recommend it...

We used a more expensive oil last year and it hasn't seemed to have faired any better than the cheaper one we used the year before that...
Anyone know if it would be better to use a lacquer type coating instead? We have a bit of a problem with splinters and i want to prevent it, especially as we are having a baby in August. I'd hate it if he got any of those nasty hurty ouchy splinters! :(

Problem is then that the lacquer peels off, and is nasty...
