Car Tire Quote

Post by imneverdrinkingagain » Mon Apr 14, 2008 5:07 pm

I need two front tires (summer) for my car. The tires that need replacing have measurements: 205/60 R16 92 V. Don't ask me what that means. The guy quoted me 300 EUR for two new tires fitted, I think he said the brand was Kumho.

I have no idea what I should be paying so my question, does this sound reasonable? I would appreciate any comments, thanks.

Here you go... http://www.carbibles.com/tyre_bible.html#sizes tells you what your code means 205/60 R16 92 V is a 205mm wide radial tyre for a 16" rim. V suggests that it's "high performance".

€300 sounds plausible. Kumho are Korean aren't they ? ... never tried them.

I've spent around €500 for a similar full set (4) of Michelins, then again I've also spent €300 on a pair (2) of smaller Nokia studless winter tyres RSi's.

Now is perhaps not the best time of year to look for a bargain on Summer tyres ... you should do that in the dead of Winter, or at least not at the time of year when everyone and his wife has been buying new summer tyres.

i wouldnt recommend tyres such as Kumho, the rubber composition tends to be rather hard.....you might be using the tyres for the next 10 years.....but sacrificing the grip..which means its NOT that safe....however the price seems reasonable....but for a few bucks more you probably get something better......Michelin/Bridgestone/goodyear/pirelli/continental (in no particular order).....those are more mainstream products....guess you really need to shop around for this.....

205/60 16 92 V means 205mm tread width, 60% of 205mm is the wall's height, 16" wheel 92 V is the load and speed rating....

Thanks for the replies guys, this information has been extremely helpful to me. I think I might see what other brands are available to me after reading the comments, but at least I know I'm not being taken to the cleaners on the 300EUR.

And sinikala, great link. I now know more about car tires than I ever imagined I would. My car is far from what you would describe as "high performance" so I do not think I need to be paying for V tires which can cost a lot more, this is something I certainly would not have realised myself.

Cheers!

Now THAT's quite a deal! Four tires mounted, balanced and an alignment too. Let us all know where you got that one at!

i am not sure how good of a deal is that...a quick look on Auto Arita shows this....

CONTINENTAL ECO CONTACT 3

175/65R14T 330.00
195/60R15H 418.00
205/55R16H 508.00

the 205/55 16 is always more expensive than the 60

fitting and balancing should be inclusive and standard in these offers.......and the choice btwn Continental vs Hankook?? I am sure you'll be able to find better reviews for the continentals

edited for my crappy english...which probably is still crappy

Duno about you, but in my experience, you'll never get as a good a deal on a pair as on a full set. Something to do with the number of tyres on a car, and the lack of willingness of a dealer to be stuck with an odd pair that they can't shift at the end of the year.

forgot to mention...Auto Arita is in Järvenpää and Vantaa....so I guess if you're in Helsinki area...you dont need to drag yourself all the way to Tampere

speed rating...here's a link to explain it...which also clarify my previous comment

yes, i do agree that you almost never get a better deal with just 2 tyres......unless you punctured one of the tyre, i dont see the reason why only 2 tyres are changed....or could it be the old set of tyres were not rotated, hence uneven wear?

I guess you assume correctly. I certainly did not intentionally rotate my tires in the two years i have owned my car. It was only in the weekend when changing back to summer tires I noticed two tires were worn and in need of replacement and the other two were not. I didn't have cash to get 4 new tires so 2 seemed like a good option.

Anyway FYI, i ended up getting 2 Michellin 205/60 R16 92H tires for 299€ fitted.

Bought them from this place,http://www.rengas-vekka.fi/ Which is local to where I live, and I think they were 30 or 40 Euros cheaper than any other place at the time and as for continentals, I had them many years ago and would never touch them again, they had a very short life
