What are your summer plans this year?

Post by sharpstone » Thu May 08, 2008 3:33 pm

Hi everyone!

Summer is round the corner again.

What're your summer plans this year? Who's doing what, and............er.......ahem.........with whom? :D :D

I'm planning a 2 week trip to Italy and Spain, sometime at the end of June. Been to Spain once, but never to Italy

Your home will be empty approximately during the last two weeks of June and you want to know when mine will be empty so we can both be robbed?

I'm going to the States some time this summer and I have a house sitter. Other than that, hanging around here.

Darn!! You mean there'll be SOMEONE in your house? Crap! Just when I was hoping to catch your home unoccupied, so I could move in, and bleed you dry :ochesey: :ochesey:

Actually, I was planning a trip to the States myself (for a long time, I've dreamt about visiting Vegas   ). But, dont think it's going to work out this year. Not enough money to lose at the roulette tables :D :D

I'm going to do some summer skiing in Zermatt in August. And then probably see a bit of France and Italy, since it's so close.

Yes and no. Yes, because it's never really a holiday - you're constantly "on show" and jet lagged (32 hours to get home for us), and if we miss telling somebody we are there and don't get to see them, we're in big trouble. And no (this time) because our eldest moved back there late last year, and we can't wait to see him face to face.

I don't mind going at all. I can enjoy American culture for a month. I have to go back once a year to warm my bones. And then there's the shopping.

I did my annual pilgrimage back this year. I think it matters where you live, Cory. I stay in LA - there's Disneyland, the entertainment industry, Mattel's outlet store is 2 blocks away (new Barbies for $2!).....it's definitely not about 'hanging' around the old haunt.

I'm going to Sweden for a day or two to see a Photographer friend from Norway. And we'll do the annual "drive and explore" again this year. I have a large guidebook to finnish points of interests and love to drive and look up spots along the way to stop and explore. We've done in the past:

Imatra/Lapeenranta/Saimaa (beautiful nature this route)
Hankoo/Raseborg/Mustionlinna/Fiskars (The Swedish side of Finland and plenty of great architecture and handcrafts)
Tampere/Janakkala/Hyvinkaa (The very Finnish of Finland and rich history)
Mikkeli/Pieksamaki/Heinola/Lahti (country life in Finland)
Porvoo and the Eastern Seaboard Cities (exploring the Russian side)

So I think I will do a Pori trip this year. Or Kotka.

I'm also going to pop up to Turku for the medieval faire on 6/26. It was a LOT of fun last year and the food was to die for!

Currently re-thinking this trip, & I may end up traveling to Finland alone because of the $$$ that is not recoverable.

We are also planning to go to the National (USA) FinnFest festival, which this year is in Duluth, MN (near where I grew up).

I also play competitive tournament golf, so I have several local amateur tournaments scheduled thru' the summer and into early fall.

"Does anyone else feel that the trip back to their birth culture is like something that they have to do rather than something that they enjoy doing? Having been away for 13+ years, the trip is only for the sake of the kids and Grandma now. Looking forward to ds getting older so he's able to make the trip on his own, actually. Feeling a little "guilty" about it, actually, loosing the enthusiasm that I once had."
I have been away for 8 years. But my mind and heart were never there anyway. I like that you say "...back to their birth culture..." instead of saying "back home." I believe home is the place where you choose to live not the place where you have to live.

Finland is my home. I chose to live in Finland and I couldn't live far from here. My mind and heart are in Finland and that is all what I want. I have found my place in the world and I am sure I will die here. :D

I hope you will enjoy your trip somehow, Cory, and come back home as soon as you can. =)

Stay in Finland of course!

Summer is such a blink-and-miss event here that it seems crazy to miss/waste it.

Would be nice if it would start though, it snowed here 2 hours ago

July: One week to Switzerland as a friend of mine is getting married there. Actually, there are two friends of mine getting married there...

August: Take my bike over to Iceland and cycle through the highlands.

The rest: Ora et labora.

That's true. :D
I'm also staying in Finland. I'm going to Sodankylä for the Midnight Sun Film Festival next month and will see the Midnight Sun for the first time. I'm excited and can't wait! :D

Haven't had a real summer holiday in years and this is the first time I'll be having a summer without having a paper to complete or an exam to study for... I'm graduating...finally. Handed in the thesis last week. I'm working in June but I will make time to go off somewhere to celebrate graduation with a cousin who's also graduating, don't know where yet, we're still trying to plan it. I'm going to lounge about and do nothing at all in July and I'm not going to feel bad about it either :D I know the summer cottage is one place we'll be, and then we're planning to boat from Kuopio to Lappeenranta. That should be interesting since I've only gone as far as Savonlinna, it's a very pretty route to go down. And August it's back to work.
