Natural History Museum reopens.

Post by Rosamunda » Mon May 19, 2008 8:12 am

On Thursday 22nd May 2008.

It has been closed for renovation work for a couple of years. Great place to take the kids on a rainy day (or any day). And even without kids.

It's not far from Kamppi, behind Tennispalatsi (there is an elk outside the main entrance).

Hi,

Is that the place that has the 2-headed cow?

Do they have any dinosaur skeletons in there? Yep, Junior is into dinosaurs at the moment :)

Yes, there are dinosaurs. I think two whole skeletons and a skull of a Tyrannosaurus Rex.

The two-headed cow was there at least 30+ years ago. Maybe it still is.

Btw wasn't the bovine Zaphod Beeblebrox-wannabe just a small calf, not a full-grown cow? Anyway, I remember the T-rex skull from years back, too - hope it's still in their collections! The uppermost floor where the skillentons used to be situated was a sort of "chamber of horrors" for the then-7-year-old Sammy. I kept imagining having to spend a night there in the dark, among the monsters  And the stuffed lion on the stairs had been petted so thoroughly you could almost see the stuffing - must have been the only suede lion in Finland  I'm rather looking forward to revisiting the museum, too. From what I've read there's been some serious renovating - new (or actually "old") floor divisions etc.

The place must be swarming with schoolkids for the next few weeks...

Btw: what IS the thing with dinosaurs? For some reason, they have always been a big thing for kids, including myself. But I can't put my finger on the "why"... :?:

Hesari had an article today on the new layout. Looks good!

Dinosaurs are BIG! That's why we are fascinated. No? No Brit kid can forget his/her first school trip to the Natural History Museum in South Kensington and THAT diplodocus in the central hall. My first visit must've been in the early 60s and in those days I think the only dinosaurs we knew about were T Rex, diplodocus and stegosaurus.... now there are tons and tons of different dinos!!!! But, I seem to remember that when I was a small girl the diplodocus was called a brontosaurus, I don't remember ever learning about diplodocus at school.

My kids went through a dino phase which involved carrying heavy plastic remplicas every place we went for a few years. We still have them and, given how heavy and solid they are, I'm sure they will still be lurking around somewhere 65 million years from now (the dinos, not the kids)!

Thanks for the heads up Penelope. Will have to drop in there next time we're down. They had a bug show a few years back and it was great.
