I visited the Halal shop in Leppävaara
Interesting place. Got some paistijauheliha and some ulkofillet. The ulkofillet was a reasonable product-but clearly their Finnish meat suppliers are coming thru with minimum aged beef. The fillet was nicely trimmed, "honest price," etc. but was really without flavor and required 'medium' cooking before was at all 'tender' (I would prefer rare)
The paisti jl was indeed fine-but as made a burger with fried onion, relish and a damn good sharp English cheddar I picked up in Tallinn, there is no point in a discourse on the 'beef flavor' when used such.
The beef ribs someone showed a pic of here could turn out nicely as they tenderize with long cooking and the sauce again obliviates the need for any 'beef flavor.'
I wonder if it would pay to have these Halal folks ask their suppliers for better-tasting aged beef.

Re: Juicy Steak
When you went there did they have T-bone steaks? The reason why I went there in the first place was in the hopes of that since they had it on their webpage. When I asked them about it they said that they didn't have any at the time, but planning on having it. I have now just been lazy to call and ask if its there. The time I was there I had then ended up with the ribs and yeah they came out ok. They do need longer cooking time and while they were ok, more time would have maybe them excellent. Anyway, I want a big t-bone!
Oh actually, just now came to mind. I decided to start a blog of my grilling/BBQing this summer (and who knows, maybe on into the winter as well
) and here's the link if anyone's interested!I'm not a pro or anything like that. Just your average guy who likes to eat meat and other good food cooked outside with fire

No - they didn't - not even the ribs.
But after the experience with the ulkofillet I was not in a rush to run back. I paid a few Euro more to my friend at a supermarket with a live butcher counter - and got some damn good T-bones.
And since I like steak rare, it really has to be good, properly aged meat for me to be interested. Ribs will deteriorate 'nicely' with long cooking and much of the taste is from the sauce, marinades, etc.
So it would be interesting to hear if anyone does get any of these 'steaks' from them and also is familiar with the taste of good beef and will comment.

They had tons of ribs when I went there. But well, the place isn't that big so maybe what they have varies on a daily basis. So where was it that you got the t-bones and how much were they? How thick were they cut? I am looking for some big and thick oneswattypiper wrote:No - they didn't - not even the ribs.

And like wattypiper says, if anyone else has some good experiences from the halal place in Leppävaara or anywhere else for that matter let us know!

" So where was it that you got the t-bones and how much were they? How thick were they cut? I am looking for some big and thick ones"
I get them from this fellow's personal allotment. Seems rather difficult to come by. Price is about 18 and thickness is what you ask for. Sometimes I get them thin to turn them fast á la fiorentino and others even inch or so thick.
Maybe key is to get Halal to be more picky with what he gets (if they should be similar to the ulkofillet). But then again maybe that's why they're 16
and don't think much of the cut when it becomes an 'L' bone. The tenderloin is very important and the other side isn't as good when you pass the point where the T disappears. (And to me the 'tenderloin' part of the T has always been more tasty than the tenderloin purchased separately. Might be imagination but then have been fooled nicely.
